Chapter 2
I am just pulling out my English textbook as the first period bell rang. I close my locker and turn to walk to class. Just as I am turning I bump into Jake who is standing behind me. I jolt and hop backwards.
“Geez Jake. Can’t you be like a normal boyfriend and stand NEXT to the locker instead of creeping up behind me?” I say annoyed. He laughs and gives me a hug.
“Where’s the fun in that?” he whispers in my ear before pulling away. I am still locked in his embrace when I feel his hands creep down my back. One of them slides to the top of my butt and I push him away.
“What are you doing?” I snap angrily. I told him many times I don’t like that kind of stuff. I don’t like being provocative. Especially in public. And he knows that, but Jake has been with many other girls the complete opposite of me. It’s been almost a month that we have been dating and he still hasn’t changed.
“Just having fun with my girlfriend.” He chuckles, moving in close to me again.
“Well that’s not the kind of fun I want.” I reply. I continue my walk down the hall away from him without turning back. I hear Jake shout something but I can’t quite make it out because of all the noise from other people around me. High school is just a crazy mess.
I see Luke walking towards me a few feet away.
“Hey Jess!” he waves and his pace becomes faster.
“Hi Luke.” I answer clutching my textbook across against my body.
“What’s wrong?” he ask his smile turning into a concerned look. “You look a bit upset.”
I didn’t even realize I had a mean expression on my face. I loosen the muscles in my cheeks and put on a gentle smile.
“I’m okay. No problem.” I manage to say. I’m really hoping he doesn’t want to go further into this topic. I don’t like telling people about how I react when Jake does certain things. People are already telling me to break it off with Jake, but I keep denying it. But now I’m starting to think they are right.
“Okay. So…are you ready for that test in English today? I heard that Mr. Stern put a lot of hard questions on that test that we didn’t go over in class.” He sits on a nearby bench and pulls out his notebook.
I take the seat next to him. “Help me study for it? Please? I don’t pay attention a lot in that class.” I confess. He looks up at me and smiles.
“Sure.” He shows me his notes for the next few minutes. He explains some things I don’t understand.
Brrriiinnnnggg!! The bell rings and Luke and I hurry to class. We take our seats in the classroom next to each other. I normally sit in the back while Luke sits in the front, but today we both sat in the middle. Luke and I continue studying until Mr. Stern tells us to get ready for the test.
“Alright take out a sheet of paper and a pencil. We are now going to begin the exam.” Mr. Stern announces passing out packets which contained the test questions.
I let out a sigh of nervousness. My grades in this class aren’t the best. I’m pretty sure most of it because Mr. Stern doesn’t like me very much. But it doesn’t matter, if I fail this test, I’ll fail the whole semester.
“Pst.” Luke whispers poking me on the arm quickly. He has a test at his desk and had already started it. He mouths the words “Look” as if letting me cheat off him.
I shake my head. I don’t want to cheat, it’s not right. No matter how bad I need to pass this test, I will not subject myself to cheating. Luke pokes me again and I give in. I roll my eyes and take a few glances at his paper. I put down wrong answers on purpose to a few questions to not make it look suspicious.
When we finally finish the test, I grab my belongings and head out of the classroom with Luke by my side.
“Thank you Luke, for helping me. You didn’t need to do that.” I thank him.
“It was a really important test. I know how much it meant to you. I could see it in your eyes before it started. I wasn’t about to let you fail.” He replies with a cheeky smile.
“Well thank you again. I really appreciate it. I don’t know what I would’ve done without you.” I say. He smiles and runs his fingers through his curly brown hair.
“Well I have to head off to class, I’ll see you at lunch.” He says before turning his heels and walking the other direction. I hurry to my second period just in time before the bell rings.
Three more hours pass of pure boring…did I say boring? I meant class. It’s the same thing. Two periods have passed and I can finally get a break. Even if it is only for forty five minutes during lunch. It’s a break I desperately need.
I head to the cafeteria and search for Luke. I don’t know where we are supposed to meet but I look around the giant room and search through all the faces to try to find him.
“Jessica!” I hear a voice yell from behind me. I quickly turn around and see Luke rushing over to me, pushing a few people out of his way.
“Hey Luke.” I say with a smile when he reaches me.
“How was class?” he asks.
“They all suck as usual. It’s a good thing I have a good memory and can pass tests easily or I would be screwed.” I confess crossing my arms across my chest as we walk towards the lunch line.
“And why is that?” he asks confused.
“Because I always doze and doodle or daydream or do something other than listen to the teacher.” I tell him.
“If you don’t pay attention then how do you have a good memory?” he chuckles with a grin on his face.
“Oh hush.” I tease nudging him in the bicep, which is pretty firm and muscular if I might say.
We buy our lunches we take a seat outside in the courtyard of the cafeteria. We share a few jokes and have some laughs. We talk about school and how crazy the homework and projects are. Luke is really nice. He seems like a great guy.
“Don’t you normally eat lunch with Jake?” Luke asks suddenly.
“Yeah, but I need a break from him right now. Plus, I haven’t seen him since this morning. When he…got me upset. “I answer. I don’t know how to explain the situation from earlier today, so I keep it short.
“Oh, I see.” He replies. He thinks for a moment then says, “Well, if you ever need someone to talk to you, I’m always her for you.” He reaches his hand over the table to hold mine.
I look up at him and his beautiful green eyes are shining the light. His brown loose curls reach the tip of his long eyelashes. His smile is innocent and sweet. In the second his hand meets mine, I feel a jolt of electricity shoot through my veins. I feel my cheeks begin to blush. A smile creeps up on my lips.
“Thank you Luke. I know I can count on you.” I have only just known him for about half a day but I feel like I can trust him with anything.
“What the hell are you doing?” Jake yells next to me.
