Chapter 11

“Where have you been all weekend?”  My best friend Sophia asks me after she runs over to me down the hallway.  I haven’t checked my phone since Saturday afternoon.  The only time I used it besides texting Jake, was to call Luke when I asked him to pick me up after the incident.

“I have been trying to call you and you never answered.  For all I know, you could have been kidnapped or even raped!”  Oh how little does she know.

“Sorry, family things.  I haven’t gotten a chance to even look at my phone.”  I put on the fakest smile I can to try to assure her things are alright.  But she knows me too well, she can see right through me.  I can’t let her know what happened.  It’s too embarrassing.

I turn on my heels and begin walking the other direction to my French class.  That is until Sophia grabs my elbow and spins me around harshly.

“Jessica, what’s wrong?” she asks, clearly irritated with my suspicious behavior. I stay silent and turn again, but this time she runs in front of me.

“Sophia, not now.  We are going to be late to class.” I say and try to push past her but she stops me once again.

“Screw class! What the heck happened to you that has you going all bonkers?” she waves her arms in the air which draws eyes on us from the passing students in the building. Bonkers?

“Me?  I’m going bonkers?  You are the one freaking out and I haven’t even said anything.”

“Jessica Santelli, I am appalled that you are forgetting that I am your best friend and that I know every feeling you have.  It’s like a superpower.  Whenever you feel something, I do too.” If only she felt how scared I was when Jake was attacking me, then her superpowers would be working.

“Can we please talk about this later?” I plead.  I can’t deal with this right now.  We are going to be late and I really don’t want to deal with the memories of the other day.  They haunt me every second.  I just want to get to French class and listen to a teacher who can’t even pull off a French accent.

“Is something bothering you?” she presses.

“Yes.  Can this conversation end now?”

“No.”  Oh no, why would it end?  I wouldn’t dream of it.

“Sophia. I will tell you later.  I promise.  Meet me at lunch okay?” I walk past her and she lets me.  I continue the walk down the hallway to class.

“See ya sugar bun!” Sophia yells from behind me.  I turn around and hold up to fingers.

“See ya boo bear!”  I turn back and keep walking.  Boo bear and sugar bun.  Those nicknames that me feel so much comfort.  Thoughts of when we were kids flood through my mind.

“Jessica? Jessica where are you?” Sophia yells for me.  I’m tucked in a corner in my closet.  I am too scared to move or even yell out to tell her where I am.  I try, but I fail.

Footsteps sound closer.  Please let it be Sophia, please please please.

The closet door swings open and I see the girl before me.  I stretch my arms out and hold her tight.

“Jessica are you alright?” My body is shaking.

“Sophia.” That’s all I can say.

“Don’t worry, it’s just a movie.  Zombie’s don’t exist, and neither do vampires.  And, we are nine years old.  We cant let movies scare us now.  There are too many things we have to fear when we are older, why be scared so early?”
