Chapter 7

I wake up and noticed that I was still in Luke’s embrace.  His arm is still wrapped around me and holding tight.  I turn to face him and see he is still sleeping.  He looks so cute and adorable.  I can’t help smile. 

That’s when I see him…just standing there.  Right next to the couch next to my head.

“Dad!” I scream and sit up quickly. 

“Wha-” Luke wakes up and sees my dad standing there. “Oh hi um…this…this isn’t what it looks like sir.”

“Dad I can explain.  Last night I was at Jake’s and then-”

“I don’t want to hear it. You two better get up off that couch now or you will never be able to stand up again!” My father roars.  His body looks tense but his face doesn’t show it.

Luke and I stand to our feet immediately.  It’s a good thing we are both fully clothed. 

“Sir last night-”

“I said I don’t want to hear it.  We will talk about this when your mother wakes up Jessica.  Now you go to your room and get dressed for church.  We have to leave soon.” My dad instructs.  I stand there waiting to hear what else he is going to say.  “Now!” he yells pointing to the stairs.  I immediately run to my room but I don’t shut the door.  I stick my head out so I can hear what my dad is saying to Luke.  He is talking quiet but I can make out some of it.

“You boy, have a lot of explaining to do.” My dad begins.  “Number one, why were you here last night?  Number two, why were you sleeping on the couch next to my daughter?”

“Well, last night, she was at Jake’s house and…and she couldn’t stay.  So she called me to pick her up.” Luke answers his voice shaking.  Why didn’t he tell my dad what really happened?  Why didn’t he tell him that Jake was drunk out of his mind and tried to rape me?  Why is he covering for me?

“Well that explains why you were here.  But not why you were lying next to her.” My dad retorts. 

“We, um, we were talking and just kind of…fell asleep.” Luke said weary. 

“Hmm.  Why did she have to leave Jake’s house in such a rush?  Is everything okay with them?  Is my daughter in trouble?”  My father asks lowering his voice.

“Um…” Luke hesitates.  Oh no.  Is he going to tell?  I’m not ready for my parents to know everything yet.  I haven’t even told them about how Jake hit me and slapped me at school Friday. 

“Tell me now.  I’m her father and I need to know if something is wrong.  I understand you are her friend and don’t want her to get all moody but you have to tell me.” My father pleads.  He hasn’t even met Luke before this.  I only became friends with him the a few days ago.  This must not look good to my father. 

“Maybe we should all talk together?” Luke suggests.  Oh great.  Make it seem like I’m hiding something.  Wait…I am. 

“Very well.  We will all stay here.  We won’t go to church and instead talk about this.  I’m going to go get dressed and you can sit there on the couch.  I’m sure you are familiar with it already.”  My dad makes his way to the staircase.  I quickly hide inside my room and shut the door.  I changed into my church clothes so my father doesn’t notice I was eavesdropping.  I put on a nice floral shirt and a pair of white jeans and sandals. 

“Jessica?” My dad says knocking on my door.  I open it and he stays at the doorway.

“Yes?”

“We aren’t going to church today.  Instead we are going to have a little talk.” 

“Okay dad.” He walks down the hallway and I shut the door.  I wait a moment until I hear his bedroom door close. 

I leave my room and rush over to Ashton’s room.  He is asleep.  He isn’t wearing pajamas like a normal person.  He stays in only his boxers.  Sometimes he doesn’t even wear those either.  Lucky for me he has something covering him today.  I turn on the light and shake him in his bed.

“Ashton! Ashton wake up!” I say rocking him.

“Go away.” He growls pushing me off the bed and rolls on his side going back to sleep. 

“Ashton I need your help.  You were right.  Jake is a terrible person and I shouldn’t have been dating him.”

“You are just now realizing that?”  He mumbles in his morning voice.

 “Yes.  Something happened last night and I need to talk to you.” I plead.  He slowly sits up on his bed and faces me.  He rubs his eyes with his palms.

“Begin.” He urged.  I explain everything that happened last night up until talking to him now.

“I warned you about him.  But no…why listen to your big brother?  He may actually help you with something for a change.”  Ashton says sarcastically. 

He is right.  I should have listened to him.  I just didn’t want to believe it.  Even though I already know how Jake is with a bunch of other girls.  I thought it would be different with me.  I thought that I could change him.  Guess not.

Jake used to be best friends with Ashton in middle school until tenth grade.  Ashton would always come home telling stories about how Jake got with another girl, or how he hooked up with a different one.  I always made fun of the idiot girls who went out with him.  I never liked Jake when he was friends with my brother.  He was always mean to me, calling me names and picking on me because I was chubby when I was younger.  But now they are seniors and I’m a sophomore. 

Last year I lost the weight and Jake started hitting on me.  I agreed to go out with him after a while.  Then I started liking him and I totally forgot about all the bad stuff he used to do to girls.  While we have been dating he always tried to take advantage of me but I never let him.  I have become one of those stupid girls.  Ashton tried to warn but I never paid attention…until now. 

“Well now Luke is downstairs and mom and dad and I are going to talk about it now.”  I tell him. 

“So no church today?”  He asks with a smile on his face.  He doesn’t like waking up too early to go to church.

“No church today.  Why don’t you take Elissa to get breakfast or something?” I suggest.

“Don’t tell me what to do.”  He replies with a grin.  He stands up and walks to his closet.

“Do you mind?” He asks pointing to the door standing in only his boxers.

“Oh right, sorry.” I answer and leave the room.
