Chapter 6
We walk inside my house quietly. My family is asleep in their rooms. Hopefully no one hears us come in. Luke and I walk up the stairs to my room.
“Thank you so much Luke.” I say taking off his jacket and handing it back to him.
He waves his hand at mine. “You’re welcome but keep the jacket.” He smiles.
“You sure?” I ask. He nods his head. I smile and place the jacket neatly on my bed. I open my dresser by my bed and pull out a pair of warm pajamas. I’m not going to bother taking a shower. It would make too much noise, and Luke is here.
I am about to take off my wet shirt when I realize Luke is watching me. I shoot him a cold glare.
“Oh right sorry.” He laughs and turns in the other direction. I remove my wet clothes and change into my pajamas. I am wearing my tie die pants and a baggy t-shirt.
“Okay, all done. Let’s go downstairs.” I take Luke’s jacket from my bed and bring it with us downstairs.
“Have a seat on the couch. I’m just going to put this in the dryer.” I say walking to the laundry room. I set the dryer to twenty minutes and throw the jacket inside. I walk back into the living room where I left Luke. He is laying down taking up half of the sofa.
“Come here.” He gestures me over by patting the seat on the couch. He moves back from the edge so I can lie next to him. Instead, I stay standing in front of him. I raise my eyebrow and cross my arms against my chest.
“Oh come on Jess, I’m not going to do anything crazy. Come cuddle with me.” He grins.
I smile and nod my head. I take the blanket that was hanging over the sofa and lay it over us. I am forced to lie on my side so we are facing each other. He wraps his arm around my waist and pulls me closer to him.
“I’m not freezing anymore Luke.” I joke. Why is he holding me so close?
“I know. I just want to hold you in my arms again.” He smiles and I see softness is his eyes.
We stay silent staring into each other’s eyes. I don’t know what to say. I am still in shock over what happened with Jake. But Luke just makes it easier for me to forget all the bad stuff. When I’m with him everything is just fine. Nothing bad happens, its perfection. I know now that I don’t care for Jake anymore. How could I after what he just did to me and has tried in the past? I can’t believe it took this long for me to realize what everyone has been warning me about.
What I use to say to other girl’s to warn them, is now what I had just learned myself. Jake is nothing to me anymore. But why do I feel so bad and heartbroken?
Luke is a different story.
He is my friend. No…
Best friend.
He’s like a brother. No…
He is the boy who has helped me through tough times.
He is the one who came to my rescue when I thought no one else would.
He is the one who holds me when I’m scared.
“Jessica?” Luke asks in a whisper breaking me from my thoughts.
“Yes?” I answer looking up to him.
“You should fine someone better. Someone who treats you the way you should be treated, someone who treats you like a princess. Someone like…”
“Someone like you?” I finish his sentence. He raises his eyebrows and his eyes widen.
I smile to him and his face goes back to normal.
“You treat me like I’m a princess. You help me with everything. You make all the pain in my life disappear. You make me feel better when I’m sad. You are the better person Luke. It’s you.”
“Well…I only do that because…I-I like you.” He admits. His eyes lower as to not look at me. Is he afraid that I don’t feel the same way?
“Well that’s good.” I respond. His eyes shoot back up at me in confusion. “Because I like you too.” I smile feeling myself blush. It’s true. I do like him. I always had some feelings for him when I first met him. Hanging out with the last few days made my feelings grow. He makes me smile more than Jake does. And he doesn’t try to take advantage of me.
He smiles wide and his cheeks turn red. The green in his eyes shine brighter than ever.
“Really?” He yells with excitement.
“Shh!’ I laugh covering his mouth with my hand. I look to the stairs to see if anyone woke up.
Luke slowly lowers my hand from his mouth. He stares into my eyes. He leans his face closer to mine. He licks his lips while looking at mine. I close my eyes and our lips connect.
Electricity shoots through me instantly. Butterflies erupt in my stomach and I think my hands are shaking. I have never felt this way. Not even with Jake.
When I pull away I smile and open my eyes. Luke stays with his lips puckered and eyes closed.
“Luke?”
“Huh? What?” He opens his eyes and leans away. “Oh sorry.” He blushes once again. He is so adorable when he is blushing.
“It’s okay. I know you still want to kiss me.” I tease whispering in his ear. I kiss his cheek and turn my body facing the other direction. I move my back closer to Luke. He wraps his arm around me tighter and pulls me so my back is pressed against his chest.
“Goodnight.” He whispers.
“Goodnight.” I answer. I close my eyes and try to sleep, but I still feel my body heating up from the kiss. Just thinking about it is making me want to burst in laughter and jump up and down.
I feel Luke’s chest rising and falling with each breathe. I try to match mine to his. His heart is beating fast, the same pace as mine. I guess he is thinking about the kiss too.
His chin rests on the top of my head. I entwine my legs with his. I hold his hand that is wrapped around my waist. He holds my hand tight as if not wanting to let go. I know I don’t want to let go.
“Go to sleep.” He mumbles with a chuckle.
I now feel safe. Knowing that Luke is by my side I feel safe. Being linked to him makes me feel protected.
I slowly fall asleep with only Luke on my mind and a smile on my face.
