Chapter 3

“What the hell are you doing?” Jake yells next to me.

“Why are you with him? You are supposed to be with me!” Jake yells into my face.  By now nearly the whole school is watching.

“Lay off Jake! She’s just having lunch.”  Luke chimes in distracting him from me.

“You stay out of this!” Jake turns and yells at him.  As he looks towards me again, his hand flies up and slaps me across my face.  I fall to the floor clutching my cheek.  My is stinging and I tears from in my eyes.  I try my best not to cry in front of him, I never do.  This isn’t the first time he has hit me.  He has done it a couple times in the past month, but only when he gets really angry, even if it’s not because of me.  I have gotten used to it and learned not to fight back.  He is just too strong for me to try to handle.

“You douche!” Luke yells as he lunges to Jake.

“Stop it!” I scream trying to pull Luke off of Jake.  I am away when Jake punches Luke in the face.

“Stay out this!  That’s MY girl!  Who gave you the right-“Jake is cut off of when Luke knees him in the chest.

“Who gave YOU the right to treat her like this?” Luke shouts while he stands up in front of me as if protecting me.

“Please stop Luke?” I plead softly from behind him.  He doesn’t move from his spot, holding his ground.

Jake slowly stands to his feet with his arms wrapped around his abdomen.  He is trying to catch his breath because the wind was just knocked out of him.  “Get over here!” he manages to yell at me.  I didn’t want to move.  I am too scared to go to him

“GET OVER HERE!” he yells even louder. Before I even know it, I am walking over to him and being held in his arms.  Jake was squeezing me really tight.  I mouth “I’m sorry” to Luke.  He has a confused expression on his face.  I try to escape Jake’s grip but he pulls away from the cafeteria to inside the hallway.  Every eye watches us as we move.  I hear gasps and comments being said around the crowd.  Why are there no teachers around to stop what just happened?

“What the hell is wrong with you?” Jake says in my face as he slamms me against the wall.

“N-nothing Jake.” I answer quietly.

“Well then why were you flirting with that freak?”

“I-I wasn’t.  Luke and I are just friends.  I swear.”

“It didn’t look that way!  You better apologize to me! Making me look like a fool in front of the whole school.” He complains louder.

“You don’t need me to do that.” I whisper under my breath, hoping he doesn’t hear.

“WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY TO ME!!!?” He screams.  He raises his hand and slaps me across my face causing me to fall to the floor once again.  My hand clutches my cheek and my face is covered by my hair.  It’s a good thing too, because I don’t want him to see me crying.

“It better not happen again. You are not to speak to him again.  Got it?!” Jake stands bent over in front of me.

“Got it.” I answer with my voice cracking.

He doesn’t respond, instead he turns around and heads down the hallway and out of the building.  To my luck, no one was around to witness what just happened.  I grab my belongings that fell when I was knocked to the ground and head to the bathroom.

I stare in the mirror and look at my reflection.  I look like a mess.  My hair is messed up and I have makeup running down my face from the few tears the fell down my cheeks when Jake slapped me.
