Chapter 9
I convinced my father to not call the police. It took a bit of persuading but I told him that I would handle it and it won’t happen again. Hopefully.
My brother walks in the front door and enters the kitchen with Elissa trailing behind holding a vanilla ice cream cone in her hand.
“Well where have you guys been?’ my mother asks in her high squeaky voice to appear to Elissa. The young five year old has a vanilla mustache on her upper lip and she is smiling the biggest smile showing all her little teeth. Even the two missing in the front.
“Ashie took me for ice cream! There were so many flavors!” she yells and jumps onto my mother’s lap in excitement.
“Out of all the flavors you stuck with vanilla?” I say causing everyone to chuckle a little.
“Yes Jess. I want to have the best one. Vanilla is the best because not many people like it. But I feel bad for it. So I like it.” Her innocence is so cute but she is so smart. That is the deepest thing I have heard a five year old say.
“Where did you get that from?” my father asks.
“People always pick the colorful ones because they are pretty. But the pretty ones don’t taste good to me. I don’t want ice cream because it’s pretty. I want it because it tastes good.” She takes another lick from her cone and my family and I stare at Ashton. I bet he told her that line or something like it.
He raises his hands in front of him. “Don’t look at me. I didn’t tell her any of that. She said it to me in the car too.”
Luke laughs lightly and I almost forgot he was still here. I look down and see that our fingers are still entwined. I blush and bite the inside of my cheek to try and hide my smile.
“Um, Jessica?” my brother says. “Could I speak to you for a minute?” I nod and stand from the table leaving my family and Luke behind as I walk down the hallway with Ashton in front of me.
“What’s up?” I ask popping the “p”. He ruffles his fingers through his hair and looks a bit nervous. Like what he is about to say is going to have an effect on me. I mentally brace myself for this news.
“Well, I uh, I went to Jake’s.” He went to Jake’s.
“With Elissa?”
“She was in the car.”
“Alone?”
“That’s not the point Jessica. The point is I went to Jake’s house to talk to him about what happened last night.”
“And what did he say?” I’m so curious to know his side of the story. Mainly his lie of the story.
“He said that he didn’t know what he was doing and was drunk. He said he is sorry.”
“Sorry? How could he be sorry? That’s all he ever wanted from me! Sex! That was it. Nothing else. Just sex.” I realize I am raising my voice when Ashton widens his eyes. I take a few deep breaths to calm myself but its not working. How could Jake say he is sorry and that’s it?
“Exactly. He isn’t sorry. I can tell. If he was really sorry he would be doing something about it. But he’s not.” Ashton says agreeing with me, making my anger disappear a little bit.
“That’s right. Because he doesn’t care about me or our relationship. Nothing mattered to him except that he wanted to fu- um, have me.” I shuffle my feet and look to the ground. How was I so stupid this whole time? Confessing this information out loud is making me realize how much of an idiot I really am. I feel the tears stinging at the back of my eyes. I try to hold them back as best as I can.
