Another day. Another useless day. Natsu repeated his morning routine. He got up, got dressed, brushed his teeth, made breakfast, didn't eat it, said goodbye to his dad, and left for school. The same old routine. He was beginning to wonder why he was even trying. What was the point? His life was sad and grey. Sad and meaningless. Sad and meaningless....... That's what all of this was. All so pointless.
Natsu walked to school. Each step he took moved him closer and closer to the beginning of a new year. The beginning of an excuse to forget everything. An excuse to not cry. An excuse to pass his meaningless time. Since it was early morning, the sun was still below the horizon. The vibrant pink and purple that painted the sky reflected off of the many windows on the many buildings. Everything was so colorful. It didn't feel right to Natsu. It felt inappropriate. Still he reached out in hope that maybe the bright colors would paint his monochrome world.
Natsu finally made it to school after a long journey. Even though it was late August Natsu could still see his breath. At least he could. Yet another sign he was still alive. Everyone was talking. Some were talking about how excited they were for the new year of school, some were talking about how this year was going to be the same as the rest, and some were sitting down quiet in fear that someone would point them out. Natsu stood there in the middle of the crowd. All the faces around him were a blur. Whenever he was around people he felt like he was drowning. It became hard to breath as if everyone was using up all the air. So Natsu stayed silent. Most people usually avoided him. He was that one kid that your parents warned you not to play with. In this case he was the one kid that everyone expected the worse from. Natsu was suddenly pulled away from his thoughts and brought back to reality by Elsa calling his name.
"Natsu!" The raven haired boy yelled as he ran towards the crowd of people, panting.
"You. Why don't you just leave me alone." Natsu thought while trying to go back to the back of his head. Alone.
"Come on. Don't be a jerk."
"Leave me alone."
"Look......... You always look so depressed so I thought maybe we could be friends?" The cold young man blushed. Natsu was completely stunned. Nobody had ever tried to get to know him. Nobody had asked to be his friend. Nobody had reached out to him. Yet he did. He just stood there with a dumbfounded expression on his face.
".....................Sure." The raven haired boy smiled but quickly replaced that smile with a frown and a head turn in the other direction. Natsu carved a smile in his usually stone cold face. Suddenly the doors opened and screams of both joy and disappointment filled the air. Natsu stood there and let the people pour into the large campus. Soon he was the only one still outside. He stood there for a moment and took a few deep breaths. He felt enlightened. Maybe this year wasn't going to be that bad after all. Natsu started to walk into the towering building when he heard someone call out to him. He turned around to see a blond haired girl who looked she just ran a mile. Her hair was a wreck and she was sweating bullets.
"Hey! Can you please help me? Is this Fairy Tail High? Am I late?" She was trying to catch her breath as she spitted out random questions.
"Yes this is Fairy Tail High and we have ten minutes to get to the auditorium for the yearly Welcome Ceremony."
"Okay....... Thanks......." The girl had a backpack overflowing with supplies. She even had a first aid kit.
"Do........... You need help?"
"Yeah.... T-That would be great." Natsu walked over to the girl and took her bubble-gum pink backpack and swung it over his shoulders. The two teenagers walked into the now crowded halls. Several people were yelling and throwing paper balls. One guy was shoving a young man with black hair and red glasses into a locker. Natsu usually would have just ignored it and walked by but something within him sparked. He walked over to the red haired culprit and pinned him against a nearby locker. A certain blue haired book nerd slowly backed away as she was fearing the worst.
"Just what. Do you think. You're doing?" Natsu asked as he held the young man to the locker.
"Hey! Mind your own business!"
"Why were you shoving him in a locker?"
"B-Because he was being all nerdy and stuff!"
"You think that's a good reason?!!!" Natsu lifted his fist to punch guy in the face when he looked around and saw everyone staring at him in fear. Gray was nowhere to be seen. He was alone. He was drowning. He couldn't breath. He couldn't speak. A lump rose in his throat. He slowly lowered the red headed bully and he looked around. Everything began to turn black and white. Everyone had evil smiles plastered on their faces. They were all calling him a monster. A misfit. A waste of space. He backed away from the red head and the nerd. They both were looking at him like he was an animal. He ran. He kicked open the schools doors and ran some more. He ran and ran and ran. His feet started to hurt but that only made him run faster. He eventually stopped when he was sure he was far away from that dreaded school. He sat at a bench at the nearest bus stop. He buried his head in his legs in a hope it would muffle his sobs.
Natsu sat there and watched as a blur of cars passed him by. Not giving him a second look or thought. To everyone else he was just a young man waiting for a bus. To himself he was a broken and sad teenager. He sat there for the rest of the school day. No one said hi or asked him why he wasn't at school. He just thought they didn't care or they thought he was bad news. He couldn't say he didn't agree with them. His phone started to ring. It was his dad. He answered.
"Hey dad. What's up?"
"Where are you?! I got a call from the secretary, Mirajane, asking if you were sick. I then got the news that you didn't show up to school today. Did you skip?!"
"...........It's more complicated then that...... I did show up to school today......... But-"
"Please don't say you got into another fight........................................................... Natsu?" Natsu began to hyperventilate. His chest felt tight. He felt like he was choking on air.
"B-Bye."
"Natsu!" Natsu hanged up and buried his head in his legs once more. Burning hot tears fell down his face. The whole world just passed him by.
It was about twenty minutes after school ended when Natsu decided he should probably start to walk home. He stopped in his tracks when he heard a familiar voice yelling at him. He turned around to see the same blond from earlier on her knees in front of him, gasping for air. Why was she here? Did she follow him?
"What are you doing here?" Natsu said in a unusually bitter voice.
"I-I......... I just wanted to say........... What you did earlier was amazing!" Her eyes were sparkling. For the second time today the world had left him paralyzed out of shock.
"You're not scared of me?"
"Why would I be? Sure, what you did earlier would be scary for any absent minded teenager but anyone who is senseable should be thanking you for standing up for that poor guy!........ Or that's what I think." She blushed.
"Uh......... Thanks?" Natsu pulled his scarf closer to his face to hide the fact that he was blushing too.
"......... I also wanted to ask why you ran away earlier........." His eyes widened.
"I-I just didn't want to be there when the teachers came.......... That's all."
"Oh......... That blue haired girl...... Did you see her? She also wanted to say thanks........ The guy you saved was one of her close friends."
".................... I have to go..........."
"Will I see you at school tomorrow?"
".................Yeah."
Natsu started to walk home. As he walked he thought....... Maybe this world wasn't so meaningless at all.
