They rode in silence for a while before Mr. Opic broke it.
“Now by the time we get there, it’ll be time for dinner. I’ll lead you to your roommate and he’ll show you around and give you your schedule. He’s been informed that you’re coming tonight.” Cody just nodded. He watched as the outside world flashed by. The freshly fallen snow with the golden sun glittering off of it. Children playing outside after a long day at school. Badly made snowmen in the yards of houses.
He gasped silently as a large building came into view sometime much later. It was surrounded by tall iron gates. It reminded Cody of a mansion. It was dark and had a medieval atmosphere about it. Two dragons swirling around each other were on the outside gate of the building.
Mr. Opic smiled at Cody as the door of the gate opened and he drove inside. The gates slammed shut, rattling. He drove up the pathway into a large parking lot where tons of cars rested, their windows frosted and a thin layer of snow covering them.
Mr. Opic got out of the car and opened the door for Cody. “I’ll bring your trunk to your room after I hand you over to your roommate,” he said and led Cody up a walkway to a side entrance.
He opened the door and Cody followed him inside the dimly lit hallway of the school. They walked out into a larger and better lit hallway. Mr. Opic led him down several large hallways, past what Cody assumed to be the classrooms. He could see kids sitting inside at normal desks and could hear the occasional teacher talking louder than necessary.
Mr. Opic threw open two large doors to a large room with hundreds of kids chatting noisily in it. They were sitting at tables and eating food off regular school trays.
He led Cody to a table in the back of the room where two boys were sitting. One of them looked up and smiled. “Yo Mr. Opic, what’s up?” Mr. Opic smiled at the boy. “This is your new roommate, Cody. I expect you to take good care of him.” The boy smiled and pulled out the chair next to him. “Sure thing teach,” he said. Mr. Opic offered Cody a reassuring smile before leaving the room. Cody sat down nervously.
“Don’t worry Cody; we were all nervous when we first came here. Being told you’re a dragon and getting dragged from your old life can be tough.” Cody gave a bitter nod. “Oh yeah! I’m Jacob by the way,” he said.
Jacob had short black hair and russet skin. He was wearing a plaid shirt and dark blue jeans. One of his ears was pierced and his eyes were black as pitch. “I’m a shadow dragon.” Cody stared. Jacob rolled his eyes. “Chill man, not all shadow dragons are evil,” he said.
Cody shook himself mentally. “No, I’m just surprised to meet a dragon,” he said, looking down at his hands and feeling stupid. He was in a dragon school. Duh he was going to meet dragons. He was finally accepting the reality of this situation. “I’m still not sure what I am.” Jacob shrugged. “Most people don’t when they first get here.”
Jacob suddenly gasped. “Oh yeah, I forgot to introduce you,” he said, smacking his forehead and looking to the boy on the opposite end of the table. “Cody, that’s Nick,” he said. Nick smiled. He had curly brown hair and was wearing light blue jeans with a plain white T-shirt. “Hi,” he said. Cody smiled nervously. “Hi.”
