Eve was frowning and looked like she wanted to cry. Jake took a few deep breaths to calm himself. “Sorry about that,” he muttered to Cody. “Thanks for stopping me before Mr. Opic came in.” Cody shrugged uncomfortably. “No problem dude,” he said quietly.
Cody had so much to think about. What was D’s power? Why had Ross started bleeding? He looked over expecting to see Skylar hurt by D’s words but instead, Skylar looked more bored than ever.
The bell rang and the others hurried away from the table. Cody entered his math class and sat in his new assigned seat. A pretty brown haired girl of average height came up to him. “Hey, you were sitting at that table. Can you tell us why the fight started?”
The room had gone silent as the teacher had gone to get a VCR played out of a room down the hall.
Cody gulped and sank down. “I’m not sure,” he mumbled. “Please?” The girl just seemed curious, not a gossip spreader. But deep down, Cody knew he had started it. “It was just, uh, a misunderstanding.” Technically true.
The girl nodded and smiled. “Thanks,” she said and sat down next to him. Cody stared at her and she smiled. “This is my seat.” The teacher came in then and put on a movie that lasted the period until the bell rang.
The brown haired girl caught up to Cody in the hallway. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to put you on the spot there. I was just wondering becauseTylercame and sat at our table and he seemed upset and then the fight started. I’m Sarah by the way.” Sarah held out her hand and Cody took it. “Cody the-new-kid Smith,” he said. The girl smiled.
Cody said bye Sarah and took the stairs to the rooms in the basement of the school where technology classes were held. He walked into a large room with several tables to work at. There were tools, machines, sinks, and 2 doors in the large room. Jake grinned and waved at him. Cody walked over and sat down.
“Want to be my partner Cody?” “Sure Jake.” “Good because I don’t have a partner.” Cody laughed and smiled as Mr. Opic walked in to teach. But his mouth nearly hit the floor with what entered the room behind him.
The twins and D were laughing with Skylar trailing behind them slumped over with his hands in his pockets. They walked past Jake and Cody and D smacked Jake on the back of the head jokingly. Jake grinned. “You and Sky are going down in the tech contest.” D let out a laugh. “You wish. You and new guy who doesn’t even know his power? Good luck Jacob.” D and Skylar sat down at the table across from theirs. The twins sat at Cody’s table smiling.
Ross’s knuckles were wrapped by a bandage, but he and his twin were grinning. The bell rang and Mr. Opic got started. “Alright everyone! You and your partners will be creating a statue out of any resources in this room! You may use your powers but be aware of the safety rules! D, demonstration time.” Mr. Opic flung a square of sheet metal at D who caught it lazily. D held it between his thumb and pointer finger and with very slight force of his thumb, snapped it in half perfectly.
Mr. Opic nodded approvingly. “Very good. That is how we use dragon powers in this room. Carefully! However, I prefer you wear safety goggles when you do this so we don’t have another half blind kid. A kid and his partner eight years ago thought they were being funny when the old teacher was here. One kid took his glasses off and started snapping sheet metal like that. Knocked his left eye out onto the floor. His partner thought he was being funny too. He accidentally set some poor girl on fire. Both were expelled. They are some of today’s danger dragons!”
