Chapter Three

Knowing Smiles

“I’m sorry,” said Leela again, “It was my fault, if I hadn’t asked you to come with me you wouldn’t have to do the community and service today and-”

“It’s alright Leela,” Ethan reassured her, which caused my eyebrows to rise. “She would have gotten herself into trouble some other way,”

I snorted, the dumbass was right.

I lost track of Leela’s apologies, and their conversation as my eyes scanned the cafeteria. The students talked loud, and in exaggerated ways to make up for the little content their conversations had.

“Don’t ask her,” whispered Ethan.

“It’s been months,” argued Leela, “She’ll come this time,”

“She won’t, so don’t ask her,”

“It’s stupid,”

“I am right here you know,” I pointed out.

The both stared at one another; Leela averted her gaze, and stared at her lap. While Ethan just ignored me completely and turned towards her again, “Don’t,”

Disrespectful dipshits, I thought.

Leela's head hit the table, sounding with a loud thud, as she grumbled loudly, causing some of the passing people to stare at her perplexed.

"Leela," hissed Ethan quietly, "Could you cut the melodrama?”

She raised her head at this, her brown eyes blazing with hurt, "Oh! Sorry, I didn’t mean to embarrass you,”  With this she folded her arms over her chest and let herself fall into her chair.

Ethan was about to talk back, but I beat him to it, turning to Leela, “What were you two talking about?”

Her brown eyes locked with my green ones, she looked away, “I wondered whether you’d come to Ethan’s game this Saturday,”

I froze.

“Just so, I wouldn’t go alone,” she added, “I’ve been going alone for the past three months,”

Ethan murmured something close to a curse, “You don’t have to Chloe, I understand,” he offered me a smile.

The thing was, I hadn’t gone to any of the football matches since I broke up with Brendan. It hurt Ethan to not see me there, but the murmurs and whispers of the student body always caused me to snap. Besides,  the prospect of having to sit/stand for an hour watching some idiots kick a ball, while surrounded by fanatic cheerleaders, isn't the ideal way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

I took a sip from my Dr. Pepper and grimaced at the terrible taste, “I’ll think about it, ok?” I turned to Leela, “I promise,”

Leela was about to protest when Ethan cut her off, "Thank you,"

Classes kept on going, slowly, I might add, but they kept on going. I was in double History sitting besides Ethan and trying not to laugh every time the teacher made checked I wasn’t falling asleep, when the bell indicating the ending of school rang throughout the building.

“I have to go talk with  Principle Hedger,” I was stomping my way towards the lockers, Ethan followed me, a grin plastered on his face.

"I have training, stay here and then I'll drive you home," he offered.

“I’ll see,” and firmly closed my locker, leaving most of my notebooks behind.

Principal Hedger's office was a pale shade of blue, cheap fluorescents lights were flickering, making me lose track of the speech I was going to give him.
