I know love
It's a song
The intro a melodic beginning
I've seen it's beauty
I've felt it's warmth
I heard it's laughter resounding through the walls
But I've also seen it's slaughter
The verses of curses followed by the prechorus of shattered glass
It's chorus deafening as the rubble of a home once built in hopes of new beginnings start to crumble
I helplessly watch as it repeats itself
The mouths that used to utter words of love can now only sigh
I can still hear the thumping of heavy footsteps fading away as the song comes to an end
I remember the empty eyes and bitter smiles on the faces of those who were left behind
I know love
It is also a last song syndrome
Only you can never listen or choose a different song
From the moment it plays it'll be the only music you will ever hear
I know it a little too well
That even years later
With every hand that touches mine
Every whispered words, every kind smile
A song I try to silence still keeps playing on repeat inside my head
And I have to remind myself time and time again
Not to sing along
