Cassie Hayaus was not expecting her life to change forever on that warm summer day in June. Nor was she expecting visitors. She was sitting at the kitchen table in her parents house, eating pancakes for dinner and watching one of the latest anime on Netflix when she swore she heard the living room window sliding open. She paused her anime and stood from her chair, instinctively striking a fighting stance as her trained eyes scanned the room. She knew it wasn't her parents. They were on a mission somewhere in Spain. She knew it wasn't her twin brother Caine. He was on a mission somewhere in California. She had been left at home to oversee the rest of the Kylon community and make sure the rest of her superhero friends stayed out of trouble, which was a lot like trying to herd kittens, stressful and nearly impossible. Cassie's brothers had put her and her twin up for adoption when they were younger because Hego felt he wasn't ready to raise another set of twins. Mr. And Mrs. Hayaus had adopted them and welcomed them into their own superhuman family. She and her twin brother were happy here. Her dog, faithful, leapt from his bed and let out a warning growl, snapping Cassie out of her thoughts. She whistled quietly and Faithful came to her, tail wagging. "Silly boy," She said quietly.
"Hello again, little sister. Wow, it's been what ... 8 years since I saw you last?"
Cassie turned slowly towards the window ... Towards the sound of that voice. She knew the sound of that voice. She had missed the sound of that voice. "Shego!" She cried. Cassie ran and threw her arms around her older sister. Cassie remembered the argument between Hego and Shego. Shego offered to take and raise Cassie and Caine but Hego refused. He didn't want Cassie and her twin to be raised by the sidekick of a villain. He didn't want them to be influenced by Drakkin. Shego knew that he was just trying to do what was best for Cassie and Caine, but Cassie knew that She had never forgiven him for taking them from her.
Shego hugged Cassie close and gazed down into those wise blue green eyes. The young villainess tried not to smile but she couldn't help it. She would never admit it to anyone, but she loved her younger sister and enjoyed the few precious moments they got to spend together.
Cassie looked up into those green eyes and smiled back. She loved her new brothers and sisters and her adoptive parents but it was always good to see Shego. "What brings you to San Antonio, dearest sister?" She asked. Shego stroked the top of the younger girl's head and Cassie laid her head on her older sister's shoulder. "I can't pay my little sis a visit?" She asked. Cassie raised her head and looked up at Shego with those "You know I missed you" eyes and Shego grinned. "Oh come on you know I missed you," Cassie said. "You know I'm always happy to see you." The younger girl smiled. "But when is it ever just a social call with you?"
The two girls moved to sit on the couch and Faithful leapt up next to them. He curled up on Cassie's lap and stared up at the two girls. "I know I haven't come to visit in a while," Shego said. She knew she was putting it mildly. She hadn't seen her sister since her eleventh birthday. They Video called and texted each other and exchanged emails and phone calls constantly whenever they wern't busy but Shego knew it wasn't the same. "But I ... Well I need a favor." Cassie looked up into her sister's tired eyes. She had been so happy to see her sister that she hadn't noticed how haggard and exhausted her sister looked. Her father and teacher would have scolded her to know end about not maintaining her observant demeanor. Sometimes staying alert constantly was tiring, but considering that the alarms hadn't tripped when Shego had entered through the window, not staying alert could get them both killed. She also hadn't noticed how Shego kept glancing over at the Windows and the door as if she expected someone to come bursting through them at any moment. Now, Cassie knew something was wrong. She took Shego's hand in hers and gazed at her elder sister with alert eyes. "What happened?" She asked. "It's kind of a long story."
Cassie raised a hand and the protective shields around the house sprang to life. "We got time," She said.
"Well," began Shego. "Before I explain there is something you need to know. I, uh, I didn't exactly come alone."
Cassie looked to where her sister was pointing and gasped in surprise. "Hi, Hayaus," Cora Ladris said quietly. She was wearing tattered clothing and looked as exhausted as her sister. "I can explain," Shego said quickly. She knew Cora and Cassie wern't exactly friends. The Ladris family were notorious super villains. Cassie and her family were some of the best heroes in the business besides Kim Possible. The two girls respected each other as rivals and left it at that. Faithful leapt up and growled at Cora in warning but Cassie laid a firm hand on the young pup's head. "No, boy," She said. Faithful pricked his ears and whined. "Sit, Faithful." Cassie said. Faithful sat beside her obediently. "Good boy."
Cassie turned to Shego. "Well uh ... Do you remember Sam and Morgan?"
"The Lee kids?" Asked Cassie. "Yeah," answered Cora. Cassie nodded. The Lee family was known for their heists and their dangerous mad scientist parents. They once held several people hostage in the Alamo and were planning on feeding them to their giant pet carnivorous plants. She and her family had been first on the scien. Those dang plants still gave her nightmares. "What about them?"
"They escaped from prison and turned Cora's family against her and the other villains against us both. We've been running for a couple weeks now. We have nowhere else to go, Cass. She even turned our brothers against me. Team Go is hunting the two of us down as we speak."
Cassie stood and motioned for them to follow her. "Come, Faithful," She said. The young dog stood and trotted after them. Cassie lead them into her bedroom and shut the door behind her. She set up an air mattress on the floor. "You two look like you could use some rest," She told them. "I'll find you guys some clothes and you can stay here as long as you need to."
Cora and Shego changed into the clothes Cassie brought for them and collapsed onto their beds. Cora fell asleep quickly. Shego didn't. Cassie sat on the bed beside her sister and took Shego's hand. Shego could barely keep her eyes open. "Rest," Cassie whispered. "You need to get some sleep." Shego pulled Cassie close and closed her eyes. Cassie put an arm gently around her older sister. She knew Shego was showing a side of herself that no one else ever saw. Cassie smiled. She was happy that her sister felt she could be herself around her. Faithful leapt up next to them and gazed protectively out into the darkness. "Our lives just got a whole lot more interesting, boy," She whispered to Faithful. "A whole lot more interesting indeed."
