"Home should be an anchor, a port in the storm, a refuge, a happy place in which to dwell, a place where we are loved, and where we can love."

"Do not slouch, Elizabeth!"
The glare of her most feared teacher sent shivers to her spine. She did what the woman told her to do and nervously looked down to avoid her wrath.
"Girls must be like mirrors. Clear, vulnerable, modest, and..."
"Easily shattered, is it, Ms. Cole?"
Ms. Cole stopped pacing around the corners of the room. The sound of her heels slowly vanishing made everyone stare at the poor girl innocently asking the question. Poor Juliet.
Elizabeth had warned her a while ago to stop making their teacher breathe in their necks with their own choice of words. Looks like the girl didn't get her idea.
On the corner of her eye, she saw Ms. Cole standing still, dumbfounded.
Ms. Cole is pretty old fashioned in so many ways. Now that everything is coming to modernization, she sticks to the old manners. She's on her mid 40's and she never had any children. Beth discerned that it must somehow affect the way she treat the girls in class.
It's 21st Century!
She resisted the urge to roll her eyes since she might get caught and appear rude.
"Do not dare to talk back again, Juliet. Where are your manners?" the teacher said after she collected herself and began lecturing again about etiquette.
Elizabeth sighed and eyed her best friend, Sophia and turned to pay more attention to her lessons avoiding the chilly air coming from the open window.
She didn't know why she was even enrolled to this kind of school. An all-girls school. Her dad must have thought it was for the better.
She missed her old school and she still do.
It's been five months since she transferred into this small town. It's not easy for her to leave everything behind but she didn't have any choice since her dad got a new work here.
Her thoughts wandered and all of a sudden, she realized she wasn't listening anymore.
🌀 Summer (Five months ago)
"Come downstairs, James, Elizabeth."
Beth was reading her favorite mystery novel book when she heard her dad calling their names. She was on the part where the long held secret mission was supposed to be revealed but she decided to head downstairs to know what's happening.
Her brother, James, was already sitting on the couch while they waited for her. The wood on the stairs creaked as she went down to meet them. When her dad has something important to announce, he calls the family in the living room to discuss it together. Family includes her, her brother, and her dad. Just the three of them.
"Sit down."
Oh no. I didn't do anything, she thought.
Her father gazed at them both, observing if whether it is alright to say something. The siblings both lent their ears to listen. Beth looked down on her shoes.
"We're moving."
Her head instantly snapped to stare at her dad. Is he kidding? she thought. But knowing her father, he's serious. He's always serious. Always. Seriously.
"What?" Her brother erupted after a long silence.
"You heard that right, son," her dad replied. "I've got a job in there as the new engineer of the largest company in town," he explained, while grinning.
"Geez, dad. I thought you're going to accuse me of stealing a dollar from your wallet."
"You did what?"Her dad shot him an accusing glare.
"Nah, I didn't." James laughed. "I was just giving you some heart attack."
"Don't wish for it," her dad smiled, yet proceeded on lecturing. "But stealing is wrong, James."
"We're happy for you, dad," Beth managed to say after recovering from the news. "But..."
"What is it, Liza?" her dad, suddenly asked with a soft voice knowing that she's not liking the idea of moving away from their home for as long as she can remember. Calling her with her old nickname, given to her by her mother sounds so familiar as if she could hear her mom's voice lingering in her memories.
"Do we really have to move, dad?" she answered on a croaked voice. She cleared her throat and began speaking knowing that what she's going to say is selfish, "Can't you just travel there everyday?"
"It's in the country, dear. It's miles away from home."
Miles.
She knew she needn't have to argue anymore because it is a life-changing opportunity for her dad. He's been working really hard and all the wealth they have now is all because of his career in engineering.
"I hope you could understand, dear."
She could only nod. She looked at her brother, looking casual. Looks like he didn't mind.
Typical James.

That afternoon, Beth stayed on her room for hours. She decided lie on her bed after loosing interest on the climax of the mystery book she was reading. It's not time to deal with others' mystery, she thought. She had to deal with hers first.
Can't Harry Potter just cast a spell to prevent her from going?
Can't Percy Jackson diminish the thoughts she's worried about?
Probably not.
🌀
She can't sleep that evening. She kept thinking about the life she'll have in the country. This place, the city, is the only place where her mom last held her when she was a baby. Blinking the tears away, she reached out for a locket beside her lamp, a memory she won't forget. Though she never had any vivid memories and even if the darkness creeps in, shadowing the corners of the small picture of the necklace with her mom, she'll always missed her.
