This illicit romance is set in the forties when woman had much less choices than they did in the present day.Evie Miller has had a sheltered life, her parents died young and she has no siblings. She has friends but no blood family remaining. Her husband died from the result of his injuries in the war and the beautiful Evie is left widowed and lonely.

A talented gardener whose gardens are often featured in magazines, she is not unaware of her film star looks, the vulnerable Evie is ripe pickings for the Jeff Lambert an artist of some repute but married and controlling. Desperate for affection and love she is in awe of the charismatic Jeff who declares his love for Evie, although unapologetic that he is married with a child but drops her and is cruel upon learning of her pregnancy.

Determined to have her child but aware of the controversy that would cause if she remains in her home town, she departs with the help of her childhood friend to relations of theirs many miles away, as she is financially able to provide the means to do so, as she has property. Jeff writes to her, knowing that to do so could put her in a precarious position but he wants to control her and for her to be his mistress, with him providing for her. She refuses to do so but after she has born his son Charlie, she considers his offer as she feels that it may offer her some form of respectability, although currently she has pretended her son is that of her beloved dead husband Nick.

When she meets up with him and finds he has not secured a property or looked at any to provide a home for her and her son and will be out of the country for many months, she sees him for what he is and the other side of Jeff becomes apparent as he becomes physically aggressive, when she says she does not want to see him again.

She spurns his phone calls and letters whilst he is away and he reacts in the most devastating way, as he proves that at that time men had the power over women who would not bend to their demands.

Her spirit saves her as she makes a friend and the family of friends fight to get her out of the Mental Asylum that Jeff Lambert has committed her to with his lies.

It is easy to see why this book is a featured story, as the pendulum of emotions swings from one to the other as we live the journey Evie Miller travels.
