I walked into my first ever high school dance with an actual date. It felt like a dream, how easy April and I seemed to fit and how amazing the school had been decorated.
As we walked in, there was a white carpet that led all the way to the gym. I took April's hand as we walked the white carpet and she laughed.
"This is incredible! C'mon," she said dragging me with her-- eager to get to the gym.
I was in awe, as was April. We stood dumbfounded at the foot of the gym. People danced on the fake-grass dance floor as flowers hung from the ceiling and drooped down. It felt as if we were in a faerie land and we were ushered toward the photo-booth where a photographer took our photo.
The backdrop matched the spring theme, with a beautiful garden and old rocking chair for us to sit on. There was an arch in front of us with real flowers in it and the photo was taken outside the arch-frame to make it look more real.
The DJ had his table set up on stage, with a smoke machine and retro lights.
April made her way onto the dance floor and i followed her. We danced in time to the beat of the music until more people arrived and suddenly, the room was full of dancing teenagers in tuxedos or beautiful, backless evening dresses.
As April edged toward her group of friends, i walked over to the delicacy table and poured us each a cup of pink punch.
The escorts were dressed in nice black suits and because the tables were against a garden backdrop wall, made the entire experience feel as if we were at actually outdoors.
I smiled at April when i found her, handing her a cup. She took it from me with a grin and kept talking with her friends.
"Hey, whattup man?" Derek said as he came over, giving me a handshake and clap on the back. It was strange, considering this was the first time we talked since the fight and Derek was the one to start the conversation.
I looked at him through narrowed eyes and said, "not much, what about you?".
Out of the corner of my eye, i could see April giving me a worried glance but i waved off any doubts by giving her a faint smile.
It was weird, but Derek and I were talking and we actually got along.
After what seemed like forever, April came over to us and said, "Sorry Derek, but i think i'd like my date back,"
We both chuckled as we parted ways. I put my arms around April's waist as we started to dance.
"I must warn you, i'm not very good with my feet. I apologise in advance for stepping on your toes," i said as we slow danced to the fast music.
"Since when were you and Derek friends?" April asked with a laugh.
"I don't know, but he's not too bad of a guy i guess," i replied with a nervous laugh if my own.
We continued swaying slowly to the music, when a thought occurred to me.
"Hey, who are you voting for, for prom king and queen?" I asked.
"Rob..." April looked at me with an amused smile.
"This isn't prom. It's not until the fall," she laughed.
"Seriously? I have to take you dress shopping again?"
April threw her head back and laughed, a beautiful, genuine laugh. In that moment i realised how much i really loved her. This girl had changed my life, and i was forever in debt to her... so i re-payed her by doing the one thing i knew how to do-- love her.
"You don't have to, but i'd be quite disappointed if you don't," she said with wide smile.
"For you, i'd do anything," i said with a smile of my own.
"You're great, you know that right?" she said with a sigh.
"I know," i replied with a wink.
She giggled and gave me a kiss on the cheek, before retreating to the bathroom to 'freshen up'.
I was greeted once again by Derek, and we talked for a while until i realised April hadn't come back from the bathroom yet.
"Excuse me," I said to Derek as I scanned the crowd for her, suddenly worried.
"What's up bro?" Derek replied.
"I don't know, i think April might've left or something. Whatever it is, it just doesn't feel right."
"No worries dude, want me to help look for her?" He asked.
"No, it's okay. I'll find her, you enjoy the rest of the night okay?" I said walking away before he had time to reply.
Scouring the crowd for a girl in a red dress was harder than planned out to be. I couldn't find her and just when i thought i did, i realised it was just a girl in a similar dress.
I looked across the room-- worried-- until i saw a girl in the same dress. I breathed a sigh of relief as i walked over to her.
Placing my hand on her bare back, i said, "I thought you left, thank God you're okay."
Surprisingly, a girl who was not April turned around.
"Don't touch me, you creep!" She walked away from me and took her date with her.
It was then that i heard the dreaded buzz of my phone.
I walked outside to read the message and bumped into Derek.
"Found her bro?" Derek asked concerned.
"Nah, hold on let me try calling her."
"I think i saw her go that way," Derek replied, indicating toward his left.
"Thanks," i ran off just as i pulled my phone out.
Missing something?
The text read. I stopped dead in my tracks because i knew who had April.
Before i could react, someone had pushed me over and placed a bag over me.
I tried to kick as i was pulled over a muscly guy's shoulder.
He knocked me against what felt like a pole, and the once dreamy night became a real nightmare as dots danced across my vision-- making me fall unconscious.
