Sitting on white porch swing, she looked out at her surroundings. Pine and oak trees dotted the yard in front of her, the grass was a dull green and a patch of azalea bushes to her left seemed to barely cling to life. She sat there silently, a small smile forming on her dry lips. She embraced the silence and the peacefulness, as she allowed herself to relax. The scene felt like a dream, where the wind blows softly and the birds sing quietly. That thought stayed with her for a while, as she had no sense of time. Then she felt a thought, a realization, seemingly tickle the back of her brain. She closed her eyes, imaginary hands reaching for the thought. She inhaled quickly as she remembered and sat up. Her movements were fast, but the swing did not move. Nothing moved.
The sun had not shone through the pine boughs, the clouds had lingered in the same spot in the never-changing blue sky and a gentle wind had never once roused a brown, shriveled leaf from the ground. Nothing moved, except her.
She rose from her seat on the porch and walked through the grass. She focused on the ground at every step, expecting the grass to fold beneath her feet, but yet nothing moved. The silence she had originally found peaceful had now become eerily terrifying. She crouched to pick up a stick from the ground and as she went to place her hand on it, her hand simply went through it. It was as if she were a ghost. Shocked, she pulled her hand back and stood up, her mouth parted in terror. She began to back away from the phantom stick when the sensation of being drenched in ice cold water washed over her entire body. She continued to back away, until she realized that the sensation was from her walking through a tree. Now mortified, she opened her mouth to scream, but no sound came out as the ground below her feet turned ghost-like and she fell into an abyss of darkness...
