Unknown hours later, Liv was almost three-quarters of the way through her book when footsteps coming from the boys' staircase echoed off the walls.
She jumped slightly at the sudden disruption and looked up to see one of the Slytherin guys from her year coming down the steps. His body was tense and his eyes were fearful, so much so that he didn't even realize her sitting there watching him with pure curiosity.
Her brain immediately supplied the name that matched his tall and lanky, but strong built boy—Theodore Nott.

Not wanting to let her prying eyes lead to trouble she turned back to her book, but her mind was wondering back to Theodore Nott. She knew that he was friends with Draco Malfoy, but that he preferred to stay unaffiliated with the "gangs" that formed within the house, he was kind of a freelancer when it came to his choice of friends. She also knew that his family was one that valued blood purity and many members, such as his father, held high ranks among the Dark Lord's followers when the first war took place.
Now they had begun to enter another war against the dark wizard and his followers, more commonly known as Death Eaters. Liv couldn't help but scrunch her nose up at the name. Death Eaters. What compels someone to name their group such a name? She pondered silently, but her thoughts were interrupted by the abrupt yelp of Theodore Nott.

"How long have you been there?!" he sputtered before dropping his voice to an exasperated whisper. "You just scared me half to death."

Liv found herself just staring at him. She had never truly come face to face with this boy and now she found him even more interesting than before. His face was clearly defined, cheek and jaw bones fairly prominent, his brown hair cropped short and his eyes—Liv found them to be the most intriguing of his features—were a bright amber that glowed like the fire she was sitting in front of. They were so clear that she found she could watch the dancing of the flames as it was reflected. He had rendered her speechless for a second, but once she gained her composure she replied quietly,

"To be honest, I'm not sure what time it is at the moment so I can't quite tell you."

She only looked at him for a second before quickly turning back to her book. Her shy actions didn't deter Theodore as he proceeded to continue the conversation.

"It's about three in the morning." He said to her without any tint of emotion and since he had replied, Liv felt obliged to answer his initial question.

"Then I've been sitting here for four hours." He raised his eyebrows at her response.

"You've just sat there reading for four hours." He stared blankly and Liv just nodded her head. "You've got to dead tired by now, aren't you?"

Liv gave a small smile and shrugged. "No, not really, I do this often enough that the lack of sleep doesn't seem to get to me anymore. It's quite peaceful just sitting here, close enough to sleeping."

Theodore nodded in understanding and took a seat on the couch across from Liv's chair. He stared into the fire silently, the earlier tension leaving his body.

Another half an hour or so later, Liv looked up from her book once more to see the amber eyed boy asleep on the couch, his face highlighted with fiery shades.  She couldn't help but stare once more. She took in his every individual feature and allowed her gave to travel down to his forearm. She half expected to see the Dark Mark burned black into his skin like a tattoo—the serpent intertwined with the skull was the official mark of those loyal to the Dark Lord—but instead she found that his arm was left unmarked where his sleeve had traveled up in his sleep.
She couldn't help but feel elated at having decent company within her own house, most of the other Slytherins avoided her because of her close affiliation with Harry Potter or they threw slurs in her face.

There really was no neutral ground, except for now, and Liv found herself enjoying it even though her new acquaintance was currently passed out on the couch.

Smiling to herself, she placed her bookmark in her place and silently headed up to her room for the three hours of sleep she would get before morning classes came.
