My name is Y/N. I'm 13 years old and I have lived in this orphanage for as long as I can remember. I'd be lying if I said it didn't upset me but I guess not getting adopted by anyone is better than getting adopted by a bad family. The person who runs the orphanage and orders us around, goes by the name, Mary King. I'm actually not supposed to know her real name, the other kids and I, have to call her Mistress. Anyway, 3 words.
She hates me.
I hate her back so it works out well for the two of us. Actually no it doesn't. We hate each other, because I like to play pranks especially on her. It's just so funny. She get so mad. I think one of my best pranks was the classic Saran Wrap on the toilet. Thinking back on it, I'm pretty sure she ruined her clothes that day. What can I say I'm just a genius in the making.Sometimes, though, it's not that great. She has more power than me, obviously, so she'll give me the worst jobs when we're cleaning the orphanage, which just happens to be everyday. And before you say 'every day?' the mistress is the biggest neat freak I have ever met in my entire life.
My rival, one of the worst people to have every graced this world, and Mary's 'pet' is Amy. I say pet because Amy is exactly the opposite of me. Mary loves her so she gets all the nice jobs that don't involve working too hard. Lazy ass.
Amy and I hate each other. We've decided that whoever is a better person gets adopted first. Not that I'm sure any of us will get adopted, but it's nice to have hope that I'll get out of this place eventually. So far I think Amy's going to win. She has her "cute face" when everyone thinks is so innocent. I just tend to glare at everybody.
I have always known that I was different. It started when I was 7. I felt something in my fingers. A tingly feeling. Then my hands started disappearing. Anyway, it sort of creeped me out. I later found out I can fly. I say it so casually because if I freak out about it I will literally have a mental breakdown. I was in my room and I was really annoyed at Mistress because she made me clean all the stairs in the orphanage. Sounds easy, but the orphanage is 5 floors with both front and back stairways, that are at least 500 steps each.
Exhausting.
Anyway, I was sitting on my bed, when I felt a weird sort of feeling, of being light on weight. Next thing I knew I was in the air right next to the light in our bedroom. As far as I am concerned I am the only kid to have experienced this kind of thing. All of the other kids at the orphanage all seem normal enough and I'm pretty sure if that happened to anyone else they wouldn't be keeping it to themselves.
Currently I am in my room and avoiding Cloe, my annoying roommate, and her friend Serena. I hear a big commotion downstairs. I think someone's here to adopt. The kids always make a big commotion when someone's here to adopt. It's because they have hope that they'll be adopted. The poor things. I gave up being hopeful a long time ago. Wonder who it is that's here. Getting up slowly so I'm not too loud on the squeaky floorboards, I can peer out my bedroom door. Conveniently the door to my room has a perfect view of the front door. There's two people standing at the front door. One is a guy with blonde hair. He has on a jacket with glasses, and the other person is a lady with striking red hair. They're talking together in hushed tones.
I love her hair. I wish my hair was that color.
I can't hear them sadly but I almost jump out of my skin when Cloe comes up from behind me saying "boo". I don't know how I didn't hear her to be honest. "Gotcha" she says in her really annoying voice. I just roll my eyes and sigh.
"Mistress is looking for you."
"Me in particular?"
"No not necessarily, I guess there's two people here who are looking for some girl." When Cloe said that, I took in such a huge breath that I made myself choke.
"So they're adopting?" I asked quietly to Cloe, she looked confused.
"I don't know, I just know that we have to be down there soon." Cloe said. I pointed at the two people standing at the front door.
" I think that's them" The lady started walking to the door while the man stayed.
"Wow, breathed Cloe, I love her hair."
"Yeah, ok let's go to Mistress" I started pushing Cloe towards the hidden stairway that the orphans were only allowed to use. I followed her but then I stopped to look back and I saw the woman with the red hair staring right at me. Chilled, I hurried out of her line of sight, and followed Cloe down the stairs.
