20. Life

3 years later..

I finally received a call I've been waiting for all day. Hongbin was out at Ravi's place so I was able to have the apartment to myself for once. I buzzed in my visitor and neatened up my outfit as I opened the door and greeted the elderly man, allowing him to step inside.

"Mr Kim, its so nice that you took time out of your busy schedule to come and see me" I smiled, leading him into the dining room area and poured him a cup of tea.

"Well your reason for requesting this file really sparked my interest (y/n)" he replied, placing a thick bounded file in front of me. "That is all the records of Cha Hakyeon I have when I counseled him back when he was a child."

I swallowed hard as I opened up on the first page of the file and I came across pictures of him as a child. He looked so innocent but dangerous at the same time. It was a shame that he couldn't of been helped.

"We tried numerous things to get him away from causing harm to others after his disappearance from a camping trip he attended with his peer group. Nobody knows what had happened to him that night, we asked the students but they all denied seeing him" Mr Kim explained as I flipped through his file.

I finally noticed a sketch book and flipped through the pages, and to my surprise every single drawing in it were of Hongbin.  It was amazing how much Hakyeon studied him. There were drawings from almost every angle, every moment, every detail of Hongbin's life. I also noticed how he scratched out the people who stood around Hongbin in the image, including what looked like Hongbin's girlfriend.

"There's also a couple diary entries that we found at his home after his disappearance" Mr Kim said, handing me a piece of paper. I exhaled deeply and began reading the note entitled "Hongbin".

"Dear Journal, today I was bullied yet again by almost everyone at that godforsaken school. But today was different. This kid Hongbin, he made them stop. He could of just ignored them like everyone else, but he helped me to my feet and told me that he'll make sure they wont bother me again. He was really the first person who has spoken to me as a human, not a monster."

"Dear Journal, I hoped I could hang out with Hongbin today but he told me that he had to see his girlfriend and he would maybe do it another time. At least he said we could hang out soon enough, thats something right?"

"Dear Journal I hate the way these other kids hang around Hongbin. It means I'd never get the chance to. I wish they would all just disappear."

"Dear Journal, today I'm going to get rid of Hongbin's girlfriend who keeps wasting his time. She doesnt even appreciate him! This camp trip is going to be so worth it, and finally I'd have Hongbin all to myself."

I shut the file and tried to gather my thoughts after everything I had just read. Things were finally making sense now. Hakyeon was just obsessed with the fact that Hongbin treated him differently from everyone else. Hongbin treated him like a friend, and that's all Hakyeon needed at that time.

Mr Kim finally bid his farewell and Hongbin arrived shortly after that, as I prepared supper in the kitchen. I couldnt quite get those details of Hakyeon out of my head, but I knew it was now best to move on from our past.

"Hey babe what's all of this?" Hongbin asked, sifting through Hakyeon's folder.

"Its all of Hakyeon's stuff" I answered, allowing him to see everything for himself.

I turned back to Hongbin, who seemed lost in the file in front of him. He looked over the sketchbook, the diary entries and probably came to the same conclusion as me. He finally pushed the file away and exhaled deeply as I wrapped my arms around him, to comfort him.

"Its all over now though, at least we now know why he did everything he did" I sighed, placing a kiss on his forehead. "But I still have one more question that's been bothering me since day one."

"hmmm, and what's that ?" Hongbin asked, pulling me on his lap as I wrapped my arms around his neck.

"Why that ice water around your chamber?"

"Remembrance" Hongbin replied.
