Chapter 1
Thursday Morning-Cape Central High School Hallway/Baci Drove
“Put your tongue back in your face, Jonny,” Shawna exclaimed hitting him over the head with her latest romance novel she had picked up from the library. Shawna wasn’t a violent person, usually, but she did expect to get what she wanted, and would do just about anything it took to get it. Vinn, her extremely muscular boyfriend, wrapped Shawna up in his arms, as usual. Shawna defined the word beauty; anyone could see that with just one glance. She wore her hair long, so long it was past her waist, the auburn color accented her face full of striking features perfectly and long straight lines comprised her lips and nose, all accentuating her cold and pungent green eyes.
Following Jonny’s gaping stare down the florescent lit school hallway stopping at the very prominent group of three girls, Brenna declares, “How can you even look at a girl like that? Actually she’s kinda pretty huh?” Brenna sat on the floor against the lockers in the packed hallway next to Tay, her boyfriend who was madly in love with her, who had his face buried in his history textbook, not even paying attention. Brenna was also beautiful but lacked the strike that Shawna’s face held. Brenna had golden-brown hair that fell just past her shoulder blades, but as each layer of hair fell into her strikingly beautiful face she swept it away with carelessness. Her facial features were more rounded than Shawna’s, which made her appear younger than she really was. Just one look into her deep green eyes revealed the mystery and unfathomable sorrow she experienced in her short life.
It had been two long, and confusing months since the group had made their escape to Cape Town, South Africa. Their peers at their high school never accepted them; the group wasn’t normal, they didn’t worry about the latest trends or follow what show they were supposed to be watching at nine o’clock on Wednesday nights. It caused them to become social outcasts, which didn’t bother the group much because they didn’t think they had much in common with the preppy kids who went to their high school anyway. This had never stopped Jonny from staring at the attractive girls parading around the halls in their miniskirts and hooker heels, as Brenna would have called them.
“Brenna! Please do not encourage the boy,” Shawna said with a growl, making Jonny jump a little out of surprise from the harshness in her tone, while unraveling herself from Vinn’s arms. Vinn at first glance could, and probably would, be deemed a muscle head. He is in fact gorgeous, all his muscles perfectly positioned and toned on his body. He is the sort of guy girls would plaster their walls with posters of. His shiny bald head reflects off of the florescent lighting, making his brown eyes seem soft and loving. He stood awkwardly not knowing what to do with his arms now that they had nothing and no one to hold on to.
“Come on, Shawn, look at her,” Jonny finally spoke up for himself gripping onto Shawna’s shoulder, “She’s just my type.” Jonny had his shoulder length brown hair pulled back in a loose ponytail at the nape of his neck and such dark brown eyes, they were nearly black. Jonny never quite followed the lead of Shawna and Brenna; he would have been a loner if he could have managed it or if he was ever allowed much time to himself away from the rest of the group. The show his rebellion for tightly formed cliques he just usually moped around carrying a notebook with him to write down his lyrics and poems.
Vinn pushed Jonny into the lockers behind them. “Jon, you heard her. You know firsthand what happens to people like us when we get mixed up with people like them,” he proclaimed in a strong whisper, pointing his thumb behind him to the clearing hallway. Jonny turned his head slowly to face Vinn’s angry gaze, looking him up and down. He deducted, Vinn wasn’t going to take any real action with a hallway full of adolescents, and turned his head swiftly to reevaluate the gang of three well-dressed girls by their lockers.
