Knowledge comes, but wisdom lingers. ~Alfred Lord Tennyson
Ashton's POV
I went my separate way with Luke, just as the plan had predicted. We walked beside one another up to his apartment, I was surprised that Luke was not looking every which way, after all, if someone saw us together, they would instantly turn it into "big news." But Luke looked pretty calm, which was better for the both of us.
I walked inside and it felt different from every time I had entered it. Luke immediately shed off his jacket and placed it on a chair. He looked like the last thing he wanted to be right now was dressed up. I could not really blame him; he is dressed up for every day at work.
So that was what I said. "How's work been lately?" The first words we exchanged in the entire walk seemed to catch Luke's attention. So I repeated the question.
He cocked an eyebrow. "Do you really want to listen to me talk about work right now?" I shrugged. Luke shook his head as he laughed lightly. He had a point, I did not want to listen to it, but I also did not want no conversation to be going. "What kind of music do you listen to Ashton?"
"I-I don't know.." I said quietly, stuttering slightly. This seemed to make Luke a little alarmed. As he spoke.
"Are you alright?" He asked. "You seem a little off," He walked over and put his hands on each side of my face. Luke was a little taller than me and I could not bring myself to look up at him. "It's just me." He whispered. "You have nothing to fear."
"Luke.." I muttered. "Knock it off." I pushed him off of me and I could see the flash of embarrassment on his face.
"Sorry.." He said quietly and retreated to the kitchen. I watched him from a distance as he poured himself something to drink and with the shake of his hand, spilt it all over the counter and all over the front of himself, with a quick curse he shook the water off of his hand as he was entirely soaked.
I walked over and grabbed a couple of paper towels and began to wipe the counter down as Luke tried to wipe himself down. "I'm sorry, I'm a bit of a mess."
"You're not really." I told him. "Accidents happen. You should go change."
"A-Alright.." Luke said quietly and walked out of the kitchen. When I finished wiping down the counter, Luke was not back. So I wandered into the living room and looked at a black leather bound book sitting on top of a shelf. I picked it up, knowing very well it was one of the books Luke wrote poetry in.
I should have put it down, I should have put it down and walked away. Knowing very well that he did not want me reading it. Knowing very well the consequences that would come with him finding out I read it. But I was curious. Luke seemed like such a hard nut to crack, and I just wanted to know all of the ins and outs.
So I flipped open to the front page and began to read.
Upon the sun coming over the hills
With it, brought the light that was craved by many
Swallowing down the last of the pills
As the sun turned day to dark and dreary
Steps on pavement clicking away
Those out and about bumping shoulders
Everyone wanted to start their day
Or march along as soldiers
And although the sun offered a warm embrace
All that could be felt was a chilled heart
In a world where you cannot show your face
Where it no longer matters if you're smart
You must be maniacal and crude
Fortune is no longer earned
You are screwed
Your hopes are burned
Finally you stand alone
Where happiness was one familiar
But this place is no longer a home
The compassionate souls are now killers
You are alone
In a world where you do not matter
You are the drone
Your soul is shattered
I went slightly wide eyed as I read it, it was lovely but very dark. I went on.
Humans are a foolish creature as we try to ordain what is not ours
And we try to eliminate any threats to our powers
In the end we are the ants and the world is the giant
We are thieves seeking out quick profits
It is almost as if we forget that we were designed to live and breathe
To feel and understand, and I am the only one who seethes
At the nature of the cruel and unjust beast
That I belong to, as injustice is increased
I have give up on a race that can no longer decide
If they will seek glory, and let their soul die
"What are you doing..?" I turned to Luke who was standing wide eyed and red. His voice was quiet and he looked slightly shocked when he could see the book in my hand. I had no idea what to say, Luke looked so broken now. Like this was a dark side he never let anyone see, and now I had doomed anything we had together.
He walked over and snatched the book out of my hand and placed it back on the shelf. He said nothing to me, only looked away and pointed towards the door. "Get out." His voice was barely below a whisper.
"Luke I - "
"Out!" He snapped, he inhaled a shaky breath and I really never wanted to leave him to slowly hate me. "Now you know, so just get out."
"Luke, I'm sorry.." I mumbled.
"Sorry? You're sorry?" He almost sounded angry. "You don't see me hunting around to read something personal to you! I should have known better than to trust anyone like you. You're just like everyone else!" His voice was rising but he still did not look at me.
"I promise I'm not Luke - "
"Yes you are.. Just leave.." Luke muttered and he walked back to his bedroom and slammed the door. I could feel my body tense at it all, I looked towards the door and knew I could just leave. But maybe I would chase after him before giving up on everything.
