I was already out of the door and up in the sky when he plummeted outside. He searched the sky for something that he couldn't see. My body had become one with the wind, becoming insubstantial and fading into nothing. His head lifted in my direction when a mangled scream escaped my mouth. I watched as his face twisted in pain and he sank to the ground, his face buried into his hands.
"Ana, please, come back," he whispered and it carried up to me, the words filled with heart break and I faltered in my resolve. Then it dissolved completely and I floated to the ground, still refusing to be visible to him.
"Daniel," I tried to say, but no sound coming out besides a very inhuman choking noise.
"I'm so sorry, Ana," He cried softly into his hands and I became slightly visible, sinking to my knees in front of him. It was much easier being insubstantial and my body disappeared from human sight, and not even my sister could see me, the creature made of winds.
I reached out, brushing my fingers through his hair and he clamped down on it with one hand, plastering it to his head in the slight wind that had brushed by him when my invisible fingers touched him. My fingers dropped and I leaned forward, looking up into his face, jumping slightly when the wetness on his cheeks registered as tears.
Sighing, I leaned my head against his left knee and stared up at him, my hand cupping his cheek. His head slowly lifted and his hand touched his cheek, then he pulled it away, staring at the fingers that had easily went through my hand since I wasn't in the least bit substantial.
"Don't be sorry," I whispered and his eyes widened, but his head swiveled, trying to find the source of my voice.
"Ana, please, come here. I need you here with me," He said into the air, and I smiled as I tasted his words in the air.
"But I'm right here. I didn't go anywhere."
"No, I can't see you, you need to come out."
I focused on the hand that had dropped from his face when he heard me talk, and grabbed his hand, mine now completely substantial. He stared down at my hand, it seemed to be floating in the air and slowly, his hand brushed against the place where my arm was supposed to be and the air that his hand passed through rippled, giving him the slightest moment where my arm was visible before it became nothing again.
"Ana, please," His eyes searched and tried to find where my eyes should be. Sighing, I closed my eyes and he gasped, then I found myself wrapped in his arms, so tight that I could barely breathe. "Thank you."
"Daniel, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have-"
"No. I don't care Ana. The deal's off, no more of this torture for the both of us."
"But, Daniel-"
"Ana, stop. I'm still going to marry you, but I'm done with the 'no-touching' shit I asked for."
I struggled out of his arms and scooted backwards, away from him and looked up at the sky, my jaws set in a tense struggle to not blurt out the things that I wished I could say, but I couldn't. It'd hurt him too much and I didn't want him to hurt anymore, or ever again.
Instead, my head was filled with the shouts I was holding back. All the thoughts I wished to act on, the ones where I called him an ass for coming up with the stupid rule, the ones where I told him about the stress I was under, and the ones that would've hurt us both. These were the ones where I shouted something at him, then ran off, disappearing from his life forever.
My eyes closed and I pulled my knees up to my chest, wrapping my arms around them. Apparently, my thoughts were clear on my face because he stared at me for a moment, then nodded and turned his head away from me, but not before I saw the pain that brought his brows together, creasing his forehead and casting shadows over his eyes.
