"She fucking slapped you?" James cried.
I groaned. "I shouldn't have too you this."
James shook his head darkly. "No, I'm quite glad you did. Now I can kill her."
"Woah woah woah. James, you need to calm down." I soothed him, laying a hand on his arm. He leapt up, face dark. "I can't calm down! I never knew she was abusive multiple times. "
"This is why I didn't want you to come in and get my stuff with me." I muttered lowly, tucking my feet into my chest and leaning my chin on them.
James eyes darkened. "She was there when you went up?! Why didn't you tell me?!"
"James, James!"
He turned to me, green eyes too bright, as usual. "James, you need to calm down. She's still there. You don't need to worry."
James scoffed. "Don't need to worry? Mattie, she's a human being, on the loose, who is willing, and actually content, with hurting her only child."
My heart clenched. "I wasn't her only child." I snapped, shooting him a dark gaze.
James eyes softened. "Sorry. But I just think people like that belong behind bars. I really think we should go to the police."
I sighed and looked down, playing with my fingers in my lap. James was silent too, but I could feel his gaze burning a hole into my skull.
I felt tears brimming in my eyes. "I didn't want to go to the police for a reason you know." I sniffled.
I heard James lean down in front of me. "Why?"
I laughed sadly. Another sad story. Great.
I sighed. "I was eight when my father was arrested. It was a few months after Cameron's death that we got the call from the manager from the bar. He told us that Dad had started a argument with some other drunk over whose life was worse. I never knew what the other guy did to make him so angry, but eventually they were both kicked out. My father had given the manager our home phone number to pick him up before anything got out of hand. But by the time we got there, he had the man cornered."
*Flashback*
My scraggly hair hung around my face in a matted curtain. My cheeks were cold, tears nearly freezing on them in the cold London air. I grit my teeth against the cold wind, and struggled to keep up to Mummy.
Mummy was different now. She never smiled, and would hardly interact with me unless she was giving me food or water. I had become independent since Cammies death.
I sniffled quietly, not wanting to think about him. Daddy had already told me about how it was my fault, how if I told them earlier about his heavy breathing he would still be alive.
"Shut up." Mummy snapped at me. I sniffed again, quieter this time though. Best not to get on her bad side.
The wind howled past me, sweeping my hair back. I pushed thou the frigid air, desperate to find daddy and return home, to bed.
"My only son died, and it's my daughter's fault!" I heard daddy scream. I picked up the pace, desperate to find him. His tone was a scary one, low and deadly. I felt bad for whoever the poor soul was getting yelled at.
Mummy jogged ahead, looking right and left for Daddy. I heard him yell again. "I'll fucking show you true pain. Want to get a broken face? I'm not afraid to make that happen, cunt!"
I whimpered. They were just to my left, I heard them. I slowly turned.
Daddy's tall figure stood before a smaller one. His fists were clenched at his sides, and he sneered at the poor man cowering before him.
