Brooklyn

I studied his face and saw that he had beautiful brown eyes, like the colour of dark tree bark. His long-ish brown hair reached just short of his eyes. He looked down-to-earth and relaxed, compared to the clean, perfect and scientific people I was used to.

“I didn’t like the way my father worked either. I tried to make him understand that I wanted him to stop, but he never listened to me,” I said, trying to let the boy know I was on his side. I mean, I did truly want to leave the LUI and become a Degrader, but I would’ve left Rubinus.

“Where are you going to go?” he asked.

“I…erm…I,” I stuttered, absentmindedly tucking a strand of my blonde hair behind my ear.

“You can come home with me, if you want. See how the Degraders live. I have a big family, parents, two older sisters who are 21 and 19, and two younger sisters, who’re 7 and 1,” said the boy.

“Are you sure? Thank you. Are you sure your family would welcome another girl into the family?” I said, smiling.

“Actually my mum is dying for me to get a girlfriend,” he said, blushing slightly.

“You don’t have a girlfriend?” I asked, shocked.

“Nah, do you? I mean have a guy?” he said.

“No, not anymore,” I said, a hint of sadness in my voice as I knew I had lost Rubinus.

“Alright, let me explain your background to my parents. I’m Brooklyn by the way, Brooklyn Charleston,” he said, extending a hand.

I shook it.

“Ebony Forrest,” I smiled.
