Destroyed

My legs ached and my shoulder throbbed, but I still kept going. I had to end this. Finally, the oh-so-familiar silhouette of my old house, crept into view. The repetitive beat of Rubinus’ paws vigorously thrashing the smooth, polished streets. I brutally pushed through the metal gates to the house and began to smash the trap door to my father’s workshop. I made sure it was obvious that I was there, so Rubinus could follow and I could ambush him.

I knew I had roughly thirty seconds to find the serum before Rubinus would come. I frantically rushed along the white shelves and then my fingers caught on a small glass case. I grabbed it and read the label taped to it: Only use in an emergency, HEALING SERUM, four drops should be enough. I tucked it into my small bag and then waited behind a metal desk. I told myself to stay calm and willed my heart to stop beating like a drum.

I heard Rubinus footsteps overhead, not heavy enough for his wolf form. I take a deep breath as I hear him climb down the ladder. I weigh the gun in my hand and I take another shaky breath. I hear Rubinus land on the floor and he draws ever closer.

“Little pig little pig, come out wherever you are,” he said, but not horribly, more desiring.

I gathered the courage to stand up and face him.

“What do you really want Rubinus?” I said, stepping in front of the desk.

“Your love, I want you back,” he said, his voice surprisingly gentle.

“But you never really had me. I never really loved you,” I said, feeling the words hurt him as much as if I had stabbed him.

“Yes, but you have a chance with me. We could run away and have a happy life together. That Brooklyn, he has his family, he has other things to think about. You are my number one, the only person I care about,” he said.

“That’s a lie, you obviously care about yourself, that’s why you are trying to force me into loving you. Thing is, I can’t remember ever loving you,” I said, my hand grazing my bag where I knew the serum was.

Then, I pretended to cry, I forced the tears to tip and I fell into Rubinus.

“It’s okay Bryony,” he said, drawing my head to one side to where my chip lay just behind my ear.

I pulled the gun out from behind my back and put it to the back of his neck.

“I’m so sorry Rubinus,” I whispered as I pulled the trigger and it destroyed his chip and switched off his heart. I saw the light in his eyes fade as his body began to turn back into a wolf.

I pushed his heavy, lifeless body onto the floor. I took an operating knife from the table and just to make sure he was dead, slowly thrust it into his heart. I stroked the fur on his head and kissed him lightly on the forehead. Then, I picked up the gun and stowed it away in my bag with the serum. I bowed my head in respect and then I climbed back up the ladder.
