"She attracted him more than he liked." - Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice

She breathed in deeply, feeling her lungs expand with each intake of breath before finally exhaling, trying to release her emotions as the air slowly left her pursed lips.

A state of calm was supposed to overcome her, but impatience and discomfort seemed to only build.

The constant ticking of the clock and the chatter of the birds outside the Study's window seemed to ring in her ears until she broke her small concentration.

"I don't see why I need to learn how to breathe, again. I already breathe perfectly fine." Evelyn retorted softly.

After days of resting, she was eager to begin her first lesson in magic. Evelyn hadn't known, however, that the basics would have been so boring.

"You're learning patience and the ability to remove yourself from the pull of your emotions." The Beast said stiffly. "Both are essential for an unexpected battle and handling magic. You mustn't act on a feeling for it can cloud your judgement and ability. Always remember to breathe."

Evelyn highly doubted that she'd be fighting any battles in the near future and she opened her eyes, impatiently glaring at the Beast sitting in front of her.

"Ah yes," Evelyn muttered quietly, "As if it is likely that my foe would allow me to mediate before we fought to the death."

The Beast's mouth turned up a bit to reveal the beginning of a smile, but his eyes remained closed and concentrated.

Evelyn slumped back into her chair, a bit defeated and disappointed.

The Beast peeked an eye open and once he saw her focus lost, he abandoned all efforts of teaching his lesson.

"You're disappointed?" He asked, amusement dancing in his eyes.

"I just supposed we would be doing something far more spectacular than how to empty yourself through breathing."

"Magic is not for child's play, or something to be used with little care."

The Beast's gaze glazed over, his thumb lightly brushed his bottom lip, moving slowly back and forth as he entered his thoughts.

"Magic is not separate from your being, but becomes a part of you just as the organs that sustains your very life. The power consumes you, coursing through your veins until it leaves you wanting more of the surging rush.

Magic without control is like trusting a wild Beast to sleep with a lamb and foolishly expecting them both to be alive when morning wakes."

Anguish darken his features and a cold draft filled the air.

Evelyn shivered as she took in his grave words.

She didn't know how to reply, so she closed her eyes once again and tried to cancel out the world around her. She didn't know that the Beast watched her, his eyes softly following the movement of her lips as she exhaled.

He shook his head quickly, his features cleared from his moment of admiration and became stern once again as he began to choose a collection of books for Evelyn to study.

He did not try to purge himself from his emotions to gain control, for they have had the reins for far too long to be simply overcome through meditation.

It would take something far greater than that to overcome his curse.

The door opened harshly with just a twitch of her hand which caused the young woman inside to jump in surprise.

A mixture of fear and hatred swam within her eyes as she looked upon her intruder who only smirked in return.

"Were you not expecting me?" The woman walked in, allowing her dark cloak to brush pass that threshold.

"Did you not think I would find out you let him escape?" Her eyes were cold as she slowly approached the young sorceress. "The King and Queen must have paid you much for your efforts to dwell in a place such as this."

"I do not know what you're implying."

"When I found an empty cell and I learned you were the one to hide him away from me, I was ready to wring your little neck." The woman said as she took in the house's appearance nonchalantly."I don't take well to traitors."

The young woman swallowed nervously and took a step back, unnerved by the calm and collected attitude of the woman before her.

"I stopped myself though, and remember what someone once taught me." The woman purred maliciously. "Always remember to breathe."

She once more turned her cold gaze to her traitor. "I realized then that it would be far more enjoyable to kill you with a clear mind."

She quickly raised her hand and the young woman was pushed up against the wall by an invisible force. The woman could feel her throat tighten until she was gasping for air. Her frantic eyes expected to see anger, but the woman's black eyes were void of emotion, completely empty.

The force holding her up was suddenly released and she fell to the floor gasping for air.

"Where's Loki?" The woman snarled.

Sitting up shakily from the floor the young woman smiled knowing that Nessa hadn't taken everything away from her.

She had information, but she'd rather die than ever satisfy her.

"He'll never join you." She spat out. "And you'll never find him."

Anger overcame Nessa and she materialized a wicked dagger before slamming it into the woman's chest. Blood began to pool and soak her hands and she watched the life drain from the woman's eyes with distaste.

"Whoops." Nessa sighed in a bored tone and allowed the dagger to clatter to the floor loudly.

Wiping her hands clean, a vicious smile began to pull at her lips as her thoughts turned back to the fallen Prince of Asgard.

Looks like something wicked this way comes....
