Last night he said he wasn't leaving until early tomorrow morning so I invited him over. He was going to be here in twenty minutes and I had to have two horses saddled and ready.
My camo crop top with a white tank top made it easy to saddle Dreamer and Kiger. My hair was pulled back in a ponytail that was tucked in my Ariat cap. He pulled up just in time. Lunch was ribs and smashed potatoes along with a canister of tea to drink.
Grandpa met him first before I could greet him. "Nah watch you all the time on pbr." Grandpa said as I walked up. "Well I better go check on the crazies." He said before walking off.
"So what do you have planned?" He asked. "How long has it been since you've ridden a horse?" I asked him. "A while." "Then let's go." I said as I started walking towards the barn. "Wait is that what you mean by how long it's been?" He asked jogging to catch up with me.
"Yup we're going horse back riding and for lunch a picnic that's already packed." I said as I neared my horse. "Nicely played." He said as he got Dreamer's reins. "But before we go I want to give you a tour of the place and let you see all that there is." I said mounting my barebacked horse.
The only thing I was using was a hackamore and saddle bags for lunch. "Then let's get started." He said mounting. First I started with the horses. "The weanling in that stall is going to be my next rodeo horse. His name is Crugar." I said as the horses plodded along.
"So when do we see the bulls?" He asked eagerly. "Wait and see." I reassured. We passed cows eating cake and grain. "These are the cows that give us our bulls." I said as we rode by. "And lastly...." I said as we turned down the lane. Several pens with two each held the prize bulls.
I had gotten a job to take care of horses for a guy that travels a lot during the warm months. The guy lives about thirty minutes away so it's an easy drive. Today's outfit was a plain white tee and dark denim jeans.
Outfit: https://www.polyvore.com/day_working/set?id=198691398A summer and fall of working will get me a trailer and I'm planning on trading my truck in for a 'newer one.' When I got there, a note was on the front door saying what needed to be done.
I looked out over the front yard to see horses in paddocks from the front yard. "Ps don't let Ginger get you." I said aloud then looked around. He was already staring me down. "Great, first day, first enemy." I said as I walked to the barn.
He let me use a ranch horse until the animals got use to me. I got two leads for the job today and got started. The other horses moved nicely but Ginger was the bigger problem. The horse was stubborn but I finally got her moving.
A cattle dog helped me partially as I sorted out most of the weanlings today and had to finish before leaving. The lights were turned on and I was beat, trying not to fall asleep leaning on the fence.
When I finally got the last one sorted I went to the barn. There was no way I was driving home tonight. After I entered the barn I found an empty stall for the night.
The straw felt good as I laid down on it. Especially after a long hard day working. My shirt was dirt stained and my face was also covered in dirt. All night long I woke up randomly and rested then fell back asleep.
I woke up thirty minutes from sunrise and went to my truck. I had extra clothes in the back just in case. After I changed into those I got a breakfast bar out and at two of those.
I had to check the mail because yesterday in the letter posted it said that my daily task would arrive by mail. When I got to the road on horseback I checked the mail and found a letter with no name on it. It only had ranch hand written on the top line.
I opened it to see it said that I needed to try and halter break the ones sorted by tonight. "Huh that's not going to work." I said as I looked out across the plains.
When I got back I fed the horses and checked them all before I started. At lunch time a truck came rolling in. I continued to work as a woman got out. I stopped when I heard banging on a door. After giving up on that I continued to try and get a halter on a stubborn horse.
Flip flopped feet came walking in my direction. I stopped and turned around to see a dark haired woman standing there. "May I help you?" I called out to her. "Are you the only one here?" She asked. "Yeah. I am nobody else but me."
She turned and left. I got back to work and was half way done when my phone went off. "Bonner." I said before answering it.
"Having fun yet?" He asked.
"Is this some type of joke or something?" I asked him.
"No it's not a joke but how was your first day?"
"Tiring." I said putting my earbuds in so I could work and talk at the same time.
"Well get what you can done and there's a key on a nail above the door just in case." He whispered the last part.I hung up and set the horse loose. After two more my phone rang again. Bonner again. "He sure loves talking to me doesn't he?" I asked the horse I was working on. It snorted as I set it free.
Here's another chapter for you.
