It was almost time for my shift to be over and my "visitor" hasn't shown up. What the hell kind of joke is this?
I was wiping the counter off with a rag and once I was done I could leave for the day.
*ding ding*
The bell above the front door rang as it was opened and snapping my head up I had to do a double take.
Amber. Amber is here in this restaurant.
She scanned the tables and counters until her eyes landed on me and they hovered for a second before she scanned the room again.
Putting the rag back into the bucket I looked up again to see her starting to walk towards me.
My heart was pounding fast and louder as she gradually got closer. "Do you know a Jackson?" She asked me when she got in front of me.
I chocked on air "yeah actually I do."
"Well could you tell me where he is?"
I sat there for a moment just staring and blinking at her. Do I really look that different without a hood and oxygen tank with tubes?
"He's here."
"Okay, where here?" She was getting impatient.
"In front of you here."
Her eyes widened and then her jaw tightened. "What kind of sick joke is this?"
"It's not."
"Jackson... He's sick he's got tubes in his nose and he always has a hood on." She was stuttering and sounded sad.
Sighing I pulled my drivers license out of my wallet and slid it towards her. (Oh yeah I got my license. Haha. Forgot that major detail.)
Her eyes scanned the card until she dropped it and looked at me with tears in her eye.
"Jackson?"she was asking herself more than me.
"The one and only."
"What happened while I was gone?"
"A lot." I said bluntly. "I'm cancer free, a week ago just about. I been working and got my license. I told Ryan off and... I lost you."
"Lost me?" She snapped her head up to look at me.
"Yeah. Chris came and our conversations got less and less until there was nothing."
"You didn't lose me. I was working two jobs along with online schooling because I was trying to graduate early and I was working so I could buy a plane ticket to come back here buy a house and be with you. I dropped my phone in water while I was working and didn't take time to get a new one."
My jaw dropped as all of this left her mouth.
