Heartbroken Guilt

The handcuffs had been removed from Matt's wrists a few hundred metres away from the house and he began to looked behind his shoulder, watching his house shrink into nothingness. If this was a game, Matt thought to himself, who would be suffering from the most guilt right now? He would be, hands down. Whilst he certainly never thought of it as betrayal, the kiss, the affectionate smiles - you name it - made Matt realise that, despite the law, he was filled with such a remorse at what he was doing that he was literally shivering.

"You a'right?" The FBI Agent sitting next to him, David Nash, looked over at the redhead, "What ya did was very brave out there; we would've come sooner, if we could." His Texan accent was very harsh, unlike Mello's softer New Yorker one that only revealed its British foundation when he was excited about something and you could see his eyes light up... Matt shut his own tightly, thankful that he was still wearing his goggles.

Nash frowned slightly. From what he had gathered, Matt had been transferred to their branch after he had expressed an interest in tracking down the world's second most wanted man, Mihael Keehl, also known as Mello. He had even joked that, "The guy sure is unlucky enough to be second place for everything." Additionally, the FBI had been informed of Matt's place at Wammy's and how the two of them were close friends growing up. Therefore, it seemed perfect for Matt to be the one who took Mello into the corner. Immoral, yes, but who said the law had to be humane?

The explosion was unexpected. Mello was obviously working against his lifelong rival, Near - who now replaced L - to get his hands on the Death Note. Up until now, the FBI had expected the Task Force or the SPK to capture him, yet it appeared that they hadn't been able to and with Mello getting more dangerous, they decided to take him into their own hands. Hardly everyday you are being chased by three world-class police organisations.

Matt, using his technical and hacking abilities, found Mello amongst the wreckage of the Mafia HQ and took him home to help him get better. He alerted the FBI that Keehl was currently no threat and injured, meaning that they were not to come for at least a  month. But then... the kiss. It came from nowhere - or seemingly nowhere - and, Matt found it difficult to explain but... he enjoyed it. To hell with that, he loved it. Every second exploring Mello's lips was like some form of heaven to him. Of course though, this simply added fuel to the fire in his opinion and he sat at the back of the police car, squirming.

So why did Matt decide to participate in arresting his lover, his boyfriend? Was it some stupid childhood grudge he held against the blonde? After all, it was hardly small knowledge that Mello was equally as aggressive as a child as he was now. But this wasn't the reason... If only it was, Matt thought. No, the reason was simply because Matt wanted a promotion. Fair enough, of course, but to him, he felt so terribly evil for it. To say he regretted it would be an understatement to say the least...

Meanwhile, back at the house, two enemies sat side by side, staring at Mello's notebook, the two previously-clean pages now blackened with ideas. "Well," Mello sighed, "as you said, he has to be held in the nearest police station; they wouldn't come down from somewhere like California to pick up a New Yorker. But we need to do this systematically..." Near watched Mello closely, "I have a hotline to any police station in the world, Mello. This is potentially easier than we may have first presumed."

Picking up the mobile phone on the desk, Mello nodded, "Yeah, but how can you just tell them to release Matt?" Near smirked a little, "Well, who's L's successor, Mello?" "Shut up." Mello hissed, abandoning his short-lived friendliness, "We both are. I just happened to be feeling generous that day when I let you become L." He sighed again, "Listen, this is stupid, us arguing. Let's find Matt and get it over with."
