Two hours later, Mello threw the phone down in anger, "For god's sake!" he yelled, bitterly, "This is the, what, eighteenth police station I called? I've tried asking for Mello, Mihael Keehl, Matt... Bloody hell, where is he?" Near too, seemed a little crestfallen, "We must keep trying..." "That's easy for you to say!" Mello snapped, "You haven't been lifting a finger!"
Near scowled, "That's unreasonable, Mello. I have been contacting all members of the SPK to ask for their assistance. We can't do this on our own." Sighing, Near looked away, "However, I understand how you feel." Yeah right, Mello thought coldly as he stared at the nineteen year old. If only he knew how every second without Matt felt lonely and almost unbearable.
Opening his mouth, Near was about to speak when the phone suddenly rang, "It's Matt!" Mello yelped, turning on the loudspeaker, "Hey, Matt, are you alright?" His voice was full of concern as he spoke. Little did they know, Matt was sitting in a meeting room, a dozen or so suited individuals watching him closely. Not that they didn't trust Matt; it was Mello they didn't trust. "I'm fine." Matt answered, no emotion in his voice. Desperately, he wanted to just burst into tears and apologise relentlessly to Mello. Yet that wasn't allowed.
Near piped up, "Matt, it's N." He leaned forward, "Are you in a position where you can disclose your whereabouts?" The room was filled with a quiet murmuring before an agent shook his head at Matt, "I can't..." He said carefully, "But I need to know - are you still at the house?" Mello looked at Near, slightly uncomfortably, "Yes, why?" "It doesn't matter... Just stay there for now. Please." Matt hung his head a little, staring at the phone. All those eyes watching him...
Near took over the phone, "I'm sure you cannot talk to us much longer. We shall call you later." Near cut off the call and grabbed his radio, "Halle, are you still outside? Yes? Can you escort both Mello and I to the SPK HQ right now? Yes, it's an emergency." Near tugged at Mello's sleeve, "Come on; we have to go."
Mello had always taken great pleasure in questioning Near and degrading his choices. However, in this situation, he knew that Near was aware of something he clearly wasn't, so stood up and followed him outside. The car was still there and Near rushed to it, opening the door and crawling inside. Taking a seat beside him, Mello scowled a little; there were toys everywhere. Typical of Near yet still irritating to the blonde nonetheless.
"Why are we leaving?" asked Mello, removing a toy figure from beneath his leg. The car had already begun moving and gained speed as it left the house. The afternoon sky was surrendering itself to the colours of the evening; peaches and oranges. Almost a fruit bowl-coloured sky. Then again, Mello told himself sharply, now wasn't the time for in-depth descriptions of daily events. Instead, he turned his attention to Near, who was holding a rubber duck between two skeletal fingers.
A minute or so passed before Near eventually replied, "I'm afraid Matt is against you, Mello. I can give you a few reasons for this; he called us from his mobile phone. If he was really arrested, this would've been confiscated immediately. Additionally, the room in which Matt was speaking to us was unusually quiet, and his voice echoed. This alone proves that he wasn't in a police cell. The room wouldn't have been big enough to cause echoing and - even if I am wrong there - a police cell certainly wouldn't have been that quiet. You would hear other inmates, for sure."
Scowling, Mello sat forward, "You're making an assumption that he's already in jail - he hasn't even been tried yet." "Ah, but they still need to detain him." Near countered, "Especially if he is a Mafia leader with a high reputation for violence." Mello looked at his black Doctor Marten's. He used to polish them regularly, but now he had neglected them to whatever came upon them.
"My conclusion is this," Near looked at the blonde, "Matt has joined up with some kind of organisation. One that doesn't like you. And he's the bait for luring you in."
