It had been two days since Matt was "arrested" and Mello had escaped with Near. Forty-eight hours, Matt thought of it as, without his ultimate love. Although, he resented the thought of betrayal more than ever now, and hoped that, somehow, the blonde didn't know what Matt was doing. However, given that the FBI reported Mello as missing, Matt knew that he must have done. Otherwise, why would he have left? Instinct? Needless to say, Matt told himself regularly that Mello was deeply angry at him for what he was doing and continued to go about his business on that thought alone. For his own good...
However, Mello was anything but angry at Matt. In truth, he was a little nervous - not that he'd ever dare admit it - for him, and almost wanted to just hand himself in to see Matt's face again, one last time. Not that he would. He was nearly defeated before and he wasn't going through it all again.
Despite Mello's presence, the Kira investigation was still under way. Mello had expected Near to ask much more of him than he actually did, and he spent most of the time lounging around with a laptop. Near had even provided chocolate, which came as a surprise to him. Not Hershey, but it would certainly do for the time being.
It was mid-morning when Mello first interacted with Halle. Sitting on a sofa with his legs up, Mello was surveying the grounds in which Kira-suspect Light Yagami was thought to be. Halle approached him, yawning slightly, "Got anywhere?" Mello looked up at her, "You mean with the case?" Halle smirked, "I thought the Wammy's kids were supposed to be smart." Mello scowled, staring at Halle with annoyance.
"Why did you come here, anyway?" Mello asked, averting his gaze back to the screen. His hand groped for a chocolate bar on the table, "Wanted company, I guess." Halle looked down at her hands, sighing, "Near is obviously always busy, Reiner looks after him constantly and that leaves Gevanni... but he's slightly odd. We don't get on well... Also, Near wants me to volunteer as Takada's bodyguard! How stupid is that?"
Mello was very inexperienced with women in general and often felt uncomfortable around them. However, Halle appeared more... human to Mello than others did, and he felt himself sympathising with her. He had been told by Near that Takada was a news anchor and open Kira supporter who appeared to be assisting with the killings. Little did Mello know, she would also be the cause for his final breath...
"I feel lonely too," he admitted quietly, "I miss Matt." He expected a form of jest to be returned but instead Halle nodded, "I've been let down before too... It hurts, especially when you want them so badly." The two of them sat in silence, acknowledging one another. "Tell you what," Halle smiled kindly, "I'll track Matt down and bring him back, and you'll do something for me."
"What's that?" Mello was making so many deals lately; hardly like him at all. Halle's smile softened slightly, seemingly a little sad. "Make sure Near comes out of this case alive. I can't afford to lose him." Almost immediately, Mello nodded, "Done."

Nash watched the young adult light up a cigarette, holding it in his hand as though it was far more valuable than it actually was. Matt had certainly been acting strangely... He often whispered Mello's name in his sleep. Perhaps he had a form of Stockholm syndrome - wherein the victim sympathises with a criminal. Although Matt had willingly gone into this... What was the change?
Putting the cigarette between his lips, Matt noticed a woman coming towards the building. Her hair was cut oddly, yet it suited her somehow. She appeared to be frowning heavily. Matt looked at Nash who, in turn, looked at him curiously.
The men stood just outside the entrance so Halle could easily approach them. This might go easier than planned, she thought hopefully, and it did. The whole situation took five minutes for her to knock them both out and drag the unconscious Matt to her car. She drove back to the SPK HQ half an hour after she had left.
Near was not impressed, but then Mello was. And Halle always kept her promises.
