Toya POV
I woke up to my alarm going off that was set for 6:30 A.M.
I got out of bed, took a shower, curled my hair, and brushed my teeth.
I searched my closet for what to wear and finally decided to put on a pair of black flats, a long blue jean skirt, and a plaid long sleeve flannel. My parents thought young ladies should always dress conservantly.
I grabbed my phone and back pack and walked downstairs for a bowl of cereal.
I ate silently as I was scrolling on instagram on my phone.
After I finished my cereal, I put the dirty dish in the sink and walked outside and headed to school not even bothering to wait for my brother and sister.
-At school-
As always, I get looks from people. You could say, I'm not exactly "popular" simply because people know of my very religious family.
I shook off the strange looks and walked to my locker only to find my stylish best friend, Cassie waiting for me.
Cassie: Hey girl!
Toya: Hey Cassie Cass.
Cassie: So, I have an idea.
Toya: Oh boy. What is it this time Cassie?
Cassie: So, you know how my dad let me have the keys to the Mercedes for the week, right?
Toya: Yeah, so?
Cassie: He's letting me drive it to school all week, and he may consider letting me have it..but anyways, I was thinking maybe we could go to the mall and buy you some hip clothes. My treat.
I saw her reach in her purse and pull out her credit card.
I actually appreciated how she wanted to help me considering the fact that she knows my parents don't allow me to use my credit card for anything other than emergencies or food simply because they fear I may go do outrageous things with it. Like buy clothes that NORMAL teenagers wear.
Toya: Oh my gosh! Thank you! You honestly are the best!
I leaned in and hugged Cassie.
Cassie: No problem. You know you're my girl.
It honestly would make me feel a little better about myself. Once, we had to come to a school function, and of course, I was driving my mom's minivan. How cool, right? I got picked on for a whole week about that.
Toya: We better head to class or we're gone be late.
We both sped up the hall to first period.
In first period, I was doodling in my notebook not caring to pay attention until my teacher, Ms. Brown started teaching about something to do with the American Revolution.
I tried to pay attention, but slowly started nodding off until the bell rang for the next period.
-Later that day-
Toya POV
Before I knew it, it was time to go to the mall.
I walked out the school with Cassie and went to the parking lot with her as we got in her 2016 silver Mercedes C class.
Toya: I have to let my parents know I'm gone.
Cassie: I told my mom to tell them that you were spending the night with me to get a project done we have to do in Mr. Parker's class.
Toya: That's great, thanks, but how am I gonna hide the clothes when I get home?
Cassie: We'll figure something out, and if not, I'll keep the clothes at my house until you firgure out where to keep them.
Toya: Thank you soooo much.
Cassie smiled at me and we made our way to the mall.
-At the mall-
Toya POV
We walked inside some stores I'd never been in before.
We were currently in the dressing room at a random store.
Cassie: this looks absolutely gorgeous on you!
I was wearing a tight black and white striped crop top, some ripped black shorts, and some white heels.
I carefully walked to the mirror, getting adjusted to the tall shoes and admired myself in the mirror.
"I don't look too bad." I thought to myself.
Toya: It is nice knowing what it's like to actually feel confident.
Cassie: Toya, you're beautiful. Now, let's go to the food court. I'm getting hungry.
I changed out of the clothes and Cassie walked to the register to pay for the last of many outfits for the day.
Cassie tried to convince me to go into the mall with one of the new outfits on, but I don't dare the risk of seeing someone I know and they see me dressed how I was and go back to tell my parents.
And plus, I kind of wanted my new look to be a surprise for everyone at school tomorrow.
Cassie said she was in the mood for Chinese food, so we headed to Magic Wok in the food court.
As we sat down to eat, I noticed that same new face I saw at church on Sunday. I saw those French braids and knew it was the boy who sat at the back.
Something told me, me and him couldn't be compatible. He seems like a street guy. And me, I'm a church girl.
Cassie: Oooh, who's caught your eye?
Toya: Nobody. Just a familiar face I saw from church.
Cassie: Is it the same guy you saw at church Sunday?
Toya: Yeah.
Cassie: Where? I may know him.
I pointed at him when he wasn't looking and showed her.
Toya: You see him? Air force ones, white skinny jeans, and the black polo shirt.
Cassie: Girl! That's Rakim Mayers..but we all call him Rakim, or Rocky. He's one of those "aspiring rappers"
I noticed she put aspiring rappers in air quotations.
Toya: So basically he makes mixtapes and stuff.
Cassie: Something like that. He's trying to make one with his friends...they call theirselves the A$AP Mob. I'm not sure if you wanna get involved with them Toya. They're the bad boys everyone warns innocent girls about.
Toya: Yeah, okay I guess.
We finished eating and threw our plastic plates away.
Toya: Now what?
Cassie: I think we should go to Sephora and get you a makeover so we can buy you some makeup and see what we can experiment with.
Toya: If you say so.
