(Maggie's POV): I was terrible after that day at Julia's house.
My eyes were puffy, I was pale and my hair was a mess. And I was also feeling terrible, the thought of never being a mom always destroyed me.
And I was worried about John.
He yelled with his mother because of me. I knew I should be sorry about that but he proved he loved me and I couldn't stop smiling every time I thought about that.
I skipped two days of school because I was feeling really bad and I couldn't go anywhere that way.
But in the second day I couldn't resist any longer, I went to John's house.
I was wearing a short white dress and my curly black hair was falling over my shoulders. I wasn't wearing make up.
I knocked on the door and Mimi answered it. She smiled when she saw me.
John told her.
"He's outside, in the garden" she said, reading my mind.
"Thank you" I replied politely, smiling back and went to the back of the house.
I looked around but John was nowhere to be seen. He was up on a tree, glasses on, writing on a little notebook.
I smiled to myself and took a little rock and threw it at him.
"Hey! Buddy Holly!" I called.
He looked at me and smiled widely, looking relief.
"Maggie!" he said and almost fell from the tree.
I laughed. He seemed so surprised.
"I am coming" I said laughing and walked up to the tree.
There was a little poem, in a diamond shape, written on the wood.
Diamond cut Diamond, was the title.
Two cats
One up a tree
One under the tree
The cat up a tree is he
The cat under the tree is she
The tree is witch elm, just incidentally.
He takes no notice of she, she takes no notice of he.
He stares at the wooly clouds passing, she stares at the tree.
There's been a lot written about cats, by Old Possum, Yeats and Company
But not Alfred de Musset, or Lord Tennyson or Poe or anybody
Wrote about one cat under and one cat up, a tree.
God knows why this should be left for me
Except I like cats as cats be
Especially on cat up
And one under
A witch elm
Tree
I laughed.
"What's this?" I asked.
