CHAPTER FIVE—MINA
Mina woke up with her arms around Isaiah. She sat up in bed, trying to piece together what happened last night. She was relieved to find that her clothes were still on, which meant that she was still a virgin and she didn’t end up fucking Isaiah.
She didn’t tell anyone but she always woke up the morning after drinking to check. She didn’t want her first time to be a drunken disaster—something she couldn’t remember. Maybe she was over thinking things. Maybe it wasn’t that serious, but to her it was.
She wasn’t sure why she was a virgin exactly. She’d had plenty of opportunities to lose it but it was never the right time. She’d been called a bitch on more than one occasion just because she wouldn’t fuck. She just didn’t want her virginity to go to some asshole who damn sure didn’t deserve it. Her friends poked fun at her from time to time, but it didn’t bother her much. She’d lose it when she was ready . . . to someone who wasn’t a complete dick.
She got out of bed, leaving Kyla and Isaiah to sleep. She knew she wouldn’t be able to fall asleep again. She rubbed her eyes as she made her way to the bathroom to pee. When she came out, she saw Shane sitting on the couch with a small bottle of vodka in his hand. She sat next to him, wondering what was bothering him. By the look on his face, Mina knew that something had happened last night.
“Morning,” she said, taking the bottle from him. She took a swig of the liquid fire and handed the bottle back.
“Morning,” he said dryly, taking a gulp.
“You okay?”
“No,” he confessed, “but I will be.”
“You wanna talk about it?”
He opened his mouth and then closed it again, debating on whether or not he should even bother. Would she care? Did it even matter? “No one knows this,” he started, “but I had a girlfriend before I moved to Page.”
“What’s her name?”
“Alana.”
“So you went to see her last night? Is that where you went?”
Shane nodded. “Yeah. I went to see her last night. We fucked. In the morning, I realized that I’m still in love with her. I started to leave and she tried to get me to stay with her. I told her that she doesn’t love me and she said that it wasn’t true. But she can’t say it. She can’t say that she loves me too. I was with her for over a year and she won’t say it. She broke up with me before I moved . . . saying that she couldn’t do the long distance thing.”
“Maybe she just has a hard time expressing herself,” suggested Mina. “Maybe she’s just scared.”
“She has no problem expressing herself,” he reassured her with a roll of his eyes. “What is there to be afraid of? I’ve known her for years.”
“Love is a scary thing,” she replied.
“Have you ever been in love?” Mina shook her head. She’d had crushes, but she’d never fallen in love with any of them. “Don’t ever fall in love, Mina. It’s shit.”
“It’s not all shit, I’m sure.”
Shane smiled and took another swig from the bottle. “You’re right,” he said. “The fucking, kissing, and going out is fun.” Mina shot her friend a smile. “What’d you end up doing last night anyway? Did I miss anything?”
“We just got fucked up and then we went to sleep after,” she replied. “Same old.”
“So are we still going to IHOP? I really need pancakes . . . and bacon.”
