CHAPTER SIXTEEN—MINA & SEBASTIAN
Junior year was over. It was officially over. No one had summer school and all was well.
Mina was happy. It was the first time she’d been happy in a while. Everyone was friends again and everything was going good for once.
Today was also her anniversary with Isaiah. She wanted to do something special for him, so she decided that she’d make him dinner. Tonight, she’d decided, she wanted to lose her virginity. She was sure that she loved him. They hadn’t been together long, but they’d known each other forever. She wanted to lose it to him.
Shane came up to her and sat on the bench with her. “Hey.”
“Hey, Shane,” she said. “What’s up?”
“I need to tell you something . . .”
“About?”
Shane drew in a deep breath and said, “Remember when I went to see Alana when we went to the city?” Mina nodded. She had no idea where any of this was going, but she knew that it wasn’t going to be anything good. “I got her pregnant . . .”
“Oh my god!” she exclaimed, putting her hands on her head. “What are you going to do? You need to talk to her, you need to—”
“She had an abortion,” Shane confessed. “She showed up at my house Sunday morning and told me.”
“She didn’t call?”
Shane shook his head, guilty of what he’d done. “I didn’t answer any of her calls. This time, it seemed more urgent than usual . . . but I still didn’t answer. I feel like shit, Mina. You don’t understand. It’s really starting to hit me now. My baby is dead.”
“I’m sorry, Shane,” was all Mina could say.
“I just don’t know what to do,” he said, burying his face in his palms. “I love her so much. She’ll be at Stanford soon and I’ll still be over here . . . and I don’t know what to do about Aubrey.”
“Do you care about her?”
“Of course I do.”
“Then don’t string her along. End it now before she starts to fall for you.”
Shane sighed again and scratched his head. “I wouldn’t know what to say. I don’t want her to hate me.”
Mina shrugged and said, “She’ll hate you more if she’s in love with you.”
“I’m going to talk to her,” he said, nodding. “I just don’t know when.”
“Do it soon.” Mina saw Richie walking toward them, with Aubrey, Kyla, Ivy, and the twins behind him.
Richie hurried over them and said, “Guess what?”
“What?” said Mina.
“Guess what band is going to play at Warped Tour this year?” he sang.
“Misfit Parade,” said Shane with a huge grin.
“Yes!” Richie exclaimed. “They loved our demo. And they suggested we go to Warped Tour. The guy talked to some people and we’re in! Another one of their bands is going, too—Discovering Oceans. I can’t believe we’re going! This is a dream come true. People are gonna know us! What if we get signed?!”
Mina got up and hugged him. “I’m so happy for you!”
“When do you leave?” asked Shane. “Didn’t it already start?”
