New notification from Jack McLoughlin

Jack: mark?

Jack: i really need to talk to you

Jack: please mark

Mark: what's wrong?

Jack: no i need to call you please

Mark: call if you need to, is everything okay?

Mark was laying in bed, it being already late. He stared at the messages, anxiously waiting for Jack to respond. He didn't know if something was wrong.

Jack had texted Mark late that night, waking up and needing to talk to him. He felt embarrassed for asking, but his physical and emotional state felt more important.

So with that, he hesitated to call Mark, but proceeded doing so. Jack was leaning against the wall on his floor, his knees tucked up to his chest and his phone to his ear, waiting worryingly for Mark to pick up.

Mark took no time to answer the call once showing up on his phone, swiping it to hear Jack's fast breaths.

Jack tried calming down his breathing but failing when hiccuping on his air.

"Are you alright, Darling?" Mark asked with a raspy voice. Worry shows through his shaky breath.

Jack just wanted to shake his head no and let that explain how he felt. "N-no. . ." Jack began, his voice wavering, "I needed to hear your voice."

Mark furrowed his eyebrows, but responded, "Did something happen?"

Jack felt himself starting to tear up thinking about it. "I. . . I had a nightmare and you were there and. . ." He started choking on dry sobs, trying hard not to cry. "you left me. I swore it was all real and I just needed to make sure you were here."

Mark was quick to interject, "Hey, hey, it's alright. It's okay. I'm here, you see? You have nothing to worry about. I would never leave you."

Jack only buried his head into his knees, his phone still to his ear. "I'm pathetic, I'm sorry for calling you so late," Jack said, panting a bit.

Mark felt a pain in his chest after hearing that. "You aren't pathetic, Jack. And please don't be sorry."

Jack didn't say anything for a bit, for which he didn't have anything to say. "You should go to bed, I don't want to keep you up," Jack said wearily. He was tired himself, but he didn't want to fall back asleep, due to the fear of having another nightmare.

Mark didn't think keen of that. "No, I want to make sure you go to sleep, okay? I'll stay on the phone with you if anything happens. That way if you wake up from another nightmare, I'll be right here."

Jack was surprised by Mark's effort and found it quite thoughtful, so he agreed as he crawled back into his bed.

"Mark?" Jack said after laying in his bed for a few moments.

"Yes, Jack?"

"Thank you. . . for everything," Jack said, his eyes becoming heavier with the thought of having a peaceful sleep.

"You don't need to thank me, I should thank you," Mark countered with a small smile on his face.

Jack didn't say anything back, he didn't need to, because Mark knew he smiled at his response.

Thirty minutes passed and it was leading into midnight where Mark was. He didn't mind staying up and making sure Jack was alright.

He had already gotten up to get a drink to help keep himself awake. He was currently at his desk, listening to the call and all he heard was Jack's soothing breaths.

Mark debated to hang up yet or not, but his choice was made when he heard shuffling and Jack mumbling, "Mark? Are you there?" He then heard more pleads, "Please, I need you, don't leave me."

Mark knew he was dreaming, but he responded to help, "I'm here, Darling. I'm right here. I'm not leaving you."

Mark heard his breaths instead of the small pleads. He smiled to himself, because he knew Jack could hopefully now sleep peacefully.

He checked the time and it was almost one in the morning. He hated the fact that he couldn't stay up all night with him on the phone and make sure Jack didn't wake up. But he had came to the conclusion of just leaving the call going and putting it on speaker. That way he could help Jack if he woke up.

With that idea in mind, he got into his bed and placed his phone on his nightstand, making sure to put the call on speaker.

He then thought about if Jack woke up the next morning to see the call still going and might question it. So, Mark texted Jack before placing his phone back on the nightstand.

Mark: it's alright to hang up the call when you see this in the morning, i wanted to make sure you didn't wake up from another nightmare :)

Mark: remember i'm always here, my little green jackaboy
