Ashley's Pov

10 months earlier

"Jordyn wait! Don't jump there!"

It was too late. Jordyn had already fallen into a bottomless hole. I would cry later, but for now, I had to keep the rest of my fireteam, my family, alive.

We kept running through the maze of lanterns and the screaming of the thralls right behind us.

"Could you guys hold off the thrall? I need to take a breather!" Leon asked.

"Get away from the lantern! Get away now!" I yelled.

"But-"

The lamp exploded and Leon disintegrated in front of my eyes.

"No,"I cried, a tear streaming down my cheek under my helmet.

"Ashley! We need to keep moving!" my sister yelled.

"I'm coming Cassie!" I breathed, composing myself and shooting a thrall that was gaining on my position.

Once we reached the currently non-existent bridge, we all stepped on the plate and held off the advancing thrall.

"Who do we have left?" Cassie yelled.

"You, Jan, Fox and I," I yelled back, choking back tears and the lump in my throat.

Finally, the bridge formed and we all ran across. Suddenly, large ogres appeared from behind the rocks and aimed their eye beams all at Cassie. Before she could even react, her body was already on the ground smoking, her ghost lie next to her, also dead.

"No Cassie!" I screamed, tears escaping my eyes. The two renaming fireteam members had to drag me into the blinding light that awaited us.

Present Day

Lola's Pov

Ashley looked distant. Occasionally, a tear would tumble down her cheeks. How could I see her bare face you ask? Our ghosts created an oxygen bubble around us so that we could refill out energy and eat something.

The six of us had made it farther than half of Ashley's last fireteam. She was much more prepared this time. Amanda and I have known about the tragedy pretty much since we met her. The speaker told us that we were especially assigned to Ashley because of her recent loss.

Ashley trained us harder than one would've expected. There were a lot of rules to make sure we were always successful. When we weren't on missions or resting, we were competing in crucibles. At first, Ashley didn't trust that we could hold our own so she would take all of the kills and carry us, almost single-handedly, to victory. She finally learned to trust Amanda and I when she was surrounded by three Minotaur. As skilled as she was, we knew she couldn't revive herself and take all four of them out by herself, but we also knew that she didn't trust us to save her either. We took the opportunity as a chance to prove our worth to our renowned leader. Amanda lured one of them away from Ashley and used her super to demolish it and then went back to help me with the last two. Ashley wasn't able to help us because she was still being resurrected by her ghost. I looked over at Amanda and nodded to her. We ran with our shotguns right at the second Minotaur and I slid under and behind it. I shot it in its back and Amanda in its front. It's wires were immediately severed by the multiple bullets that swam through its metal body. It hit the mossy Venus ground with a robotic groan. The final Minotaur retreated as Ashley shakedly stood up after being revived.

"You saved me," she had said.

"Of course we did. You're our leader, you're family."

Once Amanda mentioned 'family', Ashley embraced us and started sobbing. That was the day when we learned about her previous family. Amanda and I swore to protect her and be her family for the rest of our lives.

Now here we are, all six of us, about to face a challenge that no one has recovered from.

Alex's Pov

If I had said I was not terrified I would be bluffing. I've face a lot of thrall and hive before,  but not that many, not all in the same place at the same time And Ashley had said that was the easy part. I'm pretty sure that anyone sane would not describe that as easy or even remotely so. Then again, Ashley and her fireteam were the best of the best, and Ashley had already run this mission before, and she lost all of her fireteam members. If we survive killing Crota, then I would ask her exactly what happened.

I'll have to be gentle though, it's probably a fragile subject to talk about.

For now, we all need to focus on the present so we can survive.

A/N

I know this chapter was REALLY short, but I did need to explain what had happened to Ashley's previous fireteam. There will be more chapters similar to this one in the future.

I hope you enjoyed this chapter.
