It was 1am and you were pretty sure you should have stopped Sunggyu from drinking about two hours ago when his eyes had taken on that glazed quality, but it had been such a long time since you'd seen him truly laugh with all of himself that you couldn't begrudge him a night getting really drunk. Everyone else had already moved on to another place across the street, or had headed home, but Sunggyu was adamant the two of you stay so he could finish off the bottle of soju left over from your meal. You'd sighed at his suggestion, cursing the antibiotics you were taking which stopped you from drinking with him.
You'd been friends with him so long that you were mostly immune to his cute persuasion tactics, but having seen him so down in the dumps recently, his displays of aegyo were starting to make you smile more than making you want to puke. And when Sunggyu got drunk, he got very cute.
The restaurant was closing up, and the waiters were giving you glances. You felt it was time to go and nudged your friend in the arm, fighting to stop yourself from laughing at the dopey expression on his face. You got him up from his chair, slinging his arm over your shoulders and nodding to the waiters as you manhandled your idiot from their establishment.
The taxi ride home was punctuated by Sunggyu flitting between almost hysterical giggles at the taxi driver's obvious toupee and him furrowing his brow seriously and asking if you'd eaten. You kept explaining that yes, you had eaten. In fact, you had both eaten. Together.
You let him try to type in the keycode to his apartment four times before you finally rolled your eyes, nudging him out of the way and tapping the numbers in yourself: 2891. You wondered how he could forget.
Once inside, you sat him down on the floor, propped up by the shoe rack as you undid his laces, trying to ignore the way he kept staring at you. Before you could stand up again, he reached out to touch your hand.
"You're soooo pretty, you know! So pretty!" He said, smiling in a lopsided way, his eyes half closed.
You laughed lightly, pulling your hand away. You stood up, helping him to his feet even though he tried to brush you off a few times with a quick 'I'm fine!'. The corridor to his room seemed to stretch forever as you let him lean on you, holding up the best you could. When you finally reached his room, you were ready to just chuck him onto the bed and make a quick exit, but as he sat down with his wobbly legs on the edge of the bed and looked up at you, a goofy smile still plastered on his face and his eyes glistening, you felt like you needed to stay. He'd been through a lot recently and you just wanted to make sure he'd be okay. At least, that's what you told yourself.
It had been a long time now since you had repressed the feeling that blossomed for your friend - since you decided never to act on them, and always just to be there for him. It had been hard at times, not to reach out and touch him softly on the cheek, not to fold yourself up in his arms and rest your head against his chest where you were sure you would fit just right.
You didn't want to admit that you were staying for any other reason than to make sure your friend was safe. But as he pulled you by the hand to sit beside him and nuzzled at your shoulder with the side of his head, you felt your heart skip a beat.
"Tell me a story?" He murmured, his voice low.
You laughed, "What are you, five?"
He pouted at you and you shoved him away from you gently, making him fall back onto the pillows. He lay there for a while and you wondered if he might just fall asleep, but then his hand was on your arm and pulling you towards him. You let yourself give in.
