"Kai? Emperor Kai?"
"What?" Kai replied, snapping back to attention.
"We were wondering what your thoughts were on the new treaty."
Kai hadn't been paying attention, so he had absolutely no thoughts on the treaty, let alone any worthy of being heard by the council. His mind was elsewhere, with a cyborg Lunar princess. His distraction was evident in the doodle in the corner of his paper; it was Cinder, sitting down and adjusting the wires on her foot. Her hair was falling out of it's usual ponytail and there were smudges of oil on her face. She was not "Princess Selene." No, she was Cinder. His Cinder.
"Uh..." Kai faltered, scrambling for something to say. "If it is best for the Commonwealth, it is best overall." A few other leaders murmured in agreement, then they began droning again.
Kai, not caring to hear about the slowing epidemic, began drawing again, shading the metal on her foot. His tongue was peeking out from the corner of his mouth, and when the meeting was adjourned he hardly seemed to notice. He shuffled his "notes" together, and walked out of the meeting and back to his room in the palace. He wished Cinder would be there, but she wasn't. She never was.
Flopping down on his desk chair, he filed the doodle with the others he had drawn of Cinder; the folder increased in size pretty much every day. Anything he could think of her doing, he drew it and it went in the folder. Sometimes he flipped through his old sketches, knowing most of them were terrible and looked nothing like her, but it was a comfort to him anyway. He missed her when she was on Luna, and it pained him to know that she was so far away and he couldn't do anything about.
"Emperor Kai?" Kai flinched, dropping one of his doodles on the ground.
"Yes?"
"There's someone here for you." Looking up, he saw Cinder, hair in a ponytail, eyes sparkling, and face slightly smudged with grease.
"Cinder," he said, a smile beginning to form on his lips. The attendant left, and Cinder approached painfully slow, and as much as he wanted to run to her, hold her, kiss her, he felt like he didn't want to rush her. They hadn't seen each other in six months, but finally, she ran to him, wrapping her arms around his neck and hugging him fiercely.
"I missed you," Kai whispered.
"I missed you too."
