"We're getting you laid tonight."
I rolled my eyes at the comment made by the red head holding a dress up in front of her in the mirror as she tried to decide what to wear for our big night out. "That's not what this party is for, Hales."
The public relations company for which I worked was hosting a party in celebration of the fact that a major record label had agreed to do all their publicity through our firm. I was invited because I worked for the company and originally hadn't planned on going until Haley found out and wouldn't take no for answer. She thought I needed to get out and have some fun and completely forget about my ex, Nate, who had dumped me over a year ago because he wanted someone more exciting. I'd spent the first three months after the breakup wondering what the hell that even meant and the rest of the time actively trying to forget about the only man I'd ever allowed myself to fall in love with.
It was sad, really, I thought as I watched Haley finally pick out an outfit for the night. I was at the age where I should be out exploring my options. But instead, I spent my weekends watching Friends marathons, playing board games against myself, and eating vast amounts of ice cream in an attempt to figure out how I had managed to let the only relationship I had ever been in fail.
"So what are you wearing?"
Haley's question brought me back to reality. I shrugged at my best friend. I wasn't very good at dressing up; I didn't have Haley's knack for matching things together and making them look fabulous, so I generally settled for the easy route of jeans and t-shirts. Unfortunately, Haley said she would disown me as a friend if I tried to do that tonight, so I knew better than to offer it as a suggestion. "I don't care. Why don't you choose for me?"
A glint of mischief appeared in Haley's eye and I although it scared me a little, I figured a makeover could be kind of fun, so I plopped down on my bed and let her work her magic.
Forty-five minutes later, I gaped at my reflection in the mirror, thinking I looked stunning. I had to hand it to Haley: she truly was amazing. My tight red skirt made my butt look great, nude heels made my legs look about a mile long, and my white top gave me room to breathe while still showing off my shoulders, making me feel utterly sexy rather than clueless as usual.
Grinning, I turned back to Haley and pulled her into a hug. "You're a miracle worker. Thank you!"
Laughing, Haley rolled her eyes and squeezed me. "Don't worry about it, babe. Just remember, you're always gorgeous."
Smiling back at Haley, I let out a squeal, suddenly excited for the events to come. "You know, maybe tonight won't be so bad after all."
Apparently I spoke too soon, because few hours later, I was bored out of my mind. It turned out watching your gorgeous best friend dance with equally gorgeous guys isn't as fun as it sounds. So here I was, at the hottest nightclub in the city, drinking away my sorrows at the bar.
Sighing, I leaned up against the bar top, wincing at the pain now emanating through my feet.
My shoes were fabulous, but they hurt like hell. Glancing around to make sure no one was watching, I quickly slipped out of my stiletto pumps and sighed in relief at the liberation of my feet. Crouching down, I gently massaged my sore toes, smiling at the soothing sensation.
A low chuckle coming from my right caused me to freeze. My eyes looked to the floor beside me and spotted a pair of extremely shiny black boots. Slowly, I trailed my eyes up the figure's black denim clad long legs and past his lean torso, covered in a simple white t-shirt and dark green leather jacket, until I met his eyes. They sparkled, even in the dark of the club, and were a light color I couldn't quite make out. His hair was a mess of coal black curls and his amused grin produced dimples in his cheeks that, rather than make him look childish only added to his attractiveness and was a nice offset to the shadow of stubble along his jaw. All in all, he was hot.
