Say Something

Light blinded me as my eyes fluttered open. I squeezed them shut before slowly opening them again, blinking to adjust to the brightness of the room.

Unfamiliar gray walls surrounded me and I could hear a faint beeping in the background. Shifting my arm, I tried to sit up, but the movement caused a sharp pain to shoot through my head. Groaning, I lay back down as I tried to figure out my location.

My mind raced as I thought back through my most recent memories. Connor's comforting words. The crowd of girls. Being pushed to the ground.

And then my eyes widened in horror as I realized where I was: in the hospital.

Before the panic could set in, a nurse carrying a clipboard entered the room. She smiled brightly at me. "Great! You're awake."

I blinked in confusion as to how anything about my current situation could possibly be great, but whispered, "Yes. What happened?"

"You got a concussion. Luckily, it was a very minor one and there was no brain damage."

"Thank god," I muttered to myself, grateful for the retention of my lacking, but present social abilities. My eyes widened as I realized there was an aspect to this situation I hadn't factored in. "The baby!"

The nurse shot me a reassuring smile. "Don't worry, sweetie. The baby is perfectly healthy."

I sighed in relief as a lay my head back on the thin hospital pillow. My mind felt fuzzy from the medicine I'm sure they had given me and I had vague inkling there was something I should be asking.

"Miss Martin?"

"Yes?" I replied groggily as my eyes threated to droop closed again.

"Should I tell your boyfriend he can come see you now?"

Right. Connor. I knew I was forgetting something. Or someone in this case. "He's not my boyfriend," was my automatic reply.

But as soon as I said the words, I realized they might now be rendered false. I had become so accustomed to defending my platonic relationship with Connor that the statement had slipped out with practiced ease.

Now that Connor and I had settled our feelings for each other, is that what we were? Boyfriend and girlfriend? I still had no idea how to label our relationship, but I liked the sound of boyfriend.

I smiled up at the nurse, now fully aware of my surroundings. "Yes, can you please tell my boyfriend to come in?"

The nurse nodded and left the room. A moment later, an extremely exhausted looking Connor appeared in the doorway. Before I could say hello, he crossed the room, placed a hand on either side of my head on the pillow, and kissed me.

Kissed me as if he was Prince Charming and I was Sleeping Beauty and only his wonderful lips could save me from certain death. His lips massaged mine passionately, his tongue gently tracing along my bottom lip. I parted my lips slightly to grant him entrance and found myself softly moaning at the fire that had been ignited between us.

I could almost hear the fireworks bursting in the background and I'm certain that if I was standing, some supernatural force would have lifted us into the air. Because just as with every kiss I shared with Connor, I felt as if something other worldly was drawing us together. It was simply, pure magic.

He pulled away and whispered, "I'm so sorry."

My first thought was that he had wiped away any trace of anger I could have had towards him with that spectacular kiss. "Don't be," I replied softly, my mind still in a post-kiss haze, "that kiss was fantastic."
