"When you asked me to come over so we could hang out, this isn't exactly what I had in mind," Haley groaned as she wiped the sweat from her brow.
I smiled sweetly. "But just think, you're doing something special for your future goddaughter."
She rolled her eyes and turned to replenish the paint on the brush.
I had finally decided to decorate the room Connor and I had designated to be the baby's nursery in the apartment. The first step to my plan was to paint the room, which meant recruiting Haley to help me with my task. She was currently griping about the forced labor, which was partially my fault as I failed to mention what activity we would be engaging in when I invited her over, saying it had been forever since we hung out.
"Why isn't your boyfriend helping you do this?"
"They had a bunch of interviews to do as part of their promo tour, so he's been out working all day. He should be back soon though," I replied as I applied another coat of light grey paint to the wall.
I heard Haley grumble something under her breath that sounded suspiciously like 'that sounds like an extremely convenient excuse' but chose to ignore it.
We had been working steadily for about two hours despite Haley's complaining and were about two strokes away from completing the wall we were currently working on. Haley gently stroked the last coat of paint on the wall before dropping the brush and falling to the floor dramatically.
"Finally! I thought it would never end," she sighed as she closed her eyes.
I rolled my eyes. "You're such a diva."
She smiled as she opened her eyes. "But you love me anyway."
I couldn't help but smile back. There were times when I wanted to strangle Haley, but she was the best friend a girl could ask for. Whenever I needed her, she was there, and I knew I wouldn't have made it this far into my pregnancy without her. "That I do. Thanks for the help, Hales."
Shrugging, she sat up. "It wasn't that bad. It actually looks great," she said as she looked around the room.
I nodded in agreement. Besides a couple rogue streaks of paint, the room looked like it had been colored by professionals.
"Ready to start on the next wall?" I asked jokingly.
Haley responded by groaning and laying back down on the floor. I laughed at her antics as I dropped my own brush before standing up and stretching out my back. Letting out a sigh of pleasure as my muscles cracked, I smiled even wider as I heard the front door open and Connor's voice float through the apartment.
"Evie? Babe? I'm home."
Unable to hold back a squeal of excitement, I power walked as quickly as I could to meet him in the living room. Ever since our return from Ireland, Connor and I had been in the honeymoon phase of our relationship. It was as if I found everything he did amusing and adorable and every time we part I greeted him as if we hadn't seen each other for months when we reunited.
"Hey, beautiful," he said, grinning as he saw me and holding open his arms.
I flushed slightly at the compliment and walked into his embrace. "Hey."
As usual, my incredible speaking skills were in full effect.
His arms wrapped around me, squeezing me into a warm hug and I sighed happily at the instant comfort I felt being in his embrace. He pulled back a little to lean down and touch his lips to mine, smiling into the kiss.
