Hands on my waist, I turned from side to side as I inspected myself in the mirror, enjoying the way the silk of the cocktail dress Haley had helped me pick out a week ago fell over my newfound pregnancy curves. Because I currently had another human being growing inside of me, I'd outgrown my normal size of clothes and I didn't want to force myself into any old pair of pants for fear that I would end up getting stuck, so I had decided the best way to go for my night out was a dress.

Haley was a columnist for an up and coming London lifestyle magazine and her department was having a happy hour at a bar nearby. She hated going to social events alone, but her boss had made it clear that it was more mandatory than optional, so she had begged me to come along. I had agreed because since moving in with Connor, the only times I seemed to leave the apartment anymore were to go to work or go grocery or baby shopping. I was starting to miss interacting with other people.

Not that I was getting sick of Connor. In fact, he was kind of the perfect roommate. He was much tidier than I expected him to be, so there weren't any occasions where I was grossed out because he left his dirty dishes in the sink or flung his clothes in random places. The only downside was that he wasn't around much. As the band geared up for the release of their album, they were constantly doing radio interviews and television appearances in between rehearsing for the tour which would begin in a couple months. So Connor would often leave when I did for work, but return home in the late hours of the night, completely exhausted from the day's events.

Fortunately for him, he was getting a chance to relax tonight. They'd had rehearsals all day and the boys were exhausted in general, so Connor had invited them all over for a night in which probably meant movies that none of them really watched, a lot of junk food, and a possible jam session.

He'd arrived home about ten minutes ago. I'd heard the front door open, followed by the fridge as he undoubtedly removed a beer and called out my name to let me know he was back.

"Hey, Evie," he called out again, and I heard his footsteps approach from down the hall, so I turned away from my mirror to face the door as his voice became louder. "If you wanna hang out with us tonight, you're more than welcome."

I had assumed it was a boy's night, which was one of the many reasons I'd agreed to go to Haley's happy hour, so the fact that he was inviting me was a pleasant surprise.

He came to a stop in my doorway, crossing his arms over his chest and leaning against the frame, the beer bottle still closed and hanging to his side, his lips parting as though he meant to continue speaking, but stopping short as he stared at me. Blinking rapidly, he pressed his lips together and cleared his throat before speaking again. "I'm guessing you have plans tonight?"

"Yeah," I smiled sheepishly, stepping forward to slip into the close toed wedges I'd opted for instead of heels since I didn't know if I'd have to be on my feet all night. "Thanks for inviting me though."

"For sure," he nodded, glancing at my outfit. "You look nice. Big date?"

I contemplated saying yes, wondering how that would make him feel. Connor and I had never officially talked about the status of our relationship, but considering we hadn't done anything more intimate than hug since the night we met, it was safe to say that we were just friends. Which was fine, because as long as we remained amicable once the baby came, there wasn't technically a problem with that arrangement.

Except that a part of me still wondered what it would be like if we were more than friends. We'd never really gotten the chance to be a normal couple. We went from what was supposed to be a one night stand to deciding to raise a baby together and along the way, figuring that being anything besides platonic would just make a complicated situation even more disastrous.
