It's too bright.

It's not bright enough.

It's going dark again, but when she thinks the lights are going out they burst again, and it gets too bright for her. She closes her eyes, opens them again to see nothing she knows of. The ever changing bursts of darkness and light have simmered, settling for a dim, yellow light provided from the over-head lamps.

At first she thinks she's gone deaf because she can't hear a thing; but she focuses and controls her breathing; then she can hear the buzzing coming from the lamps above. With a sigh of relief she goes to get up, but she can't; her arms and legs are strapped down - and when she tries to wriggle herself free a searing pain shoots up through her side. She curses in Russian after stifling a scream.

She tries to jog her memory and remember what happened last, so she closes her eyes and bites down on her lip. She and Clint had spent a few weeks in Morocco, they helped each other, they trained, they kissed, they had fights, they made love and they were happy. Then she re-called coming back from Morocco as demands from Fury, she remembered Stark's little pokes about her and Clint, she remembered the speech from Fury and then it all came flooding back in such crystal clear rapidness.

Clint grazes his teeth against her collar bone, before planting feverish kisses against it, and she pulls at his hair and scratches his neck gently as they make love underneath his sheets. They're closed in and only aware of each other, and even though it's against Fury's orders, they only care for each other.

She's scared and frightened for what tomorrow will bring, she doesn't want to be seen by HYDRA because they ruined the girl she could have been, and they used her talents for such awful things; like the killing of all those people in the hospital fire. They put her into the 'The Red Room' and made her into the monster she is, the rage she had locked up inside her would burst out of her; just the mention of their name made her feel violently ill.

But in this moment with Clint, his hands holding her delicately and still so strongly, his eyes connecting with hers and the way he whispers "I'll never leave you, Natasha" is enough to stop her feelings of worry - she feels invincible. As she calls out his name while blinded with intense pleasure, the both of them forget anything that isn't each other, and for once they feel alive and free.

She smiles at the memory for a moment, before it sinks it what happened.

HYDRA has taken her.

The bile starts to rise from the pit of her stomach, her fists clench by her sides and she starts to break out into a cold sweat. 'This is just a dream' she tries to convince herself, shutting her eyes, hoping that any minute she'd wake up cocooned in Clint's arms, so she waits, waits and waits a little longer to finally open her eyes and see she has not moved.

She starts to struggle again, biting down on her lip to keep the screams of agony inside her mouth - the more she struggles, the more the pains seem to intensify. She can fill her eyes brimming with angry tears as the struggling seems to have no effect, her exposed skin rubbed viciously against the bonds keeping her tied down.

She tasted the familiar flavour of blood on the tip of her tongue, realizing she'd bitten her lip that hard that she had drawn blood. Her immense struggle became feeble after ten solid minutes, she found herself completely spent and so frozen with fear that she could not physically move. Drenched in sweat, fatigue, hungry and afraid, she prayed for nothing more than Clint to burst through that door and take her away; but things like that only happened in fairy tales, and this was far from a fairy tale.
