It's been at least a month since I have gotten back. Miguel calls me every now and then. It's a sunny day, and I'm shopping by the beach. I'm supposed to meet Miguel soon. Last time we talked he said he had a surprise for me.
A dog runs up to me and starts smelling my feet. "You kind of remind me of Coco." I said while petting the German Shepherd's head.
"I hope you like him." I heard Miguel's voice say with a happy tone. I looked up and saw him. I immediately smiled and hugged him. He hugged back and we sat there for a minute. "I got you a new dog. I know it's not Coco, but he is military trained."
"I love him. Thank you." I said going back to petting him. "What's his name?"
"His name is Ace." Miguel said I stood back up. I smiled and then he grabbed his phone.
"Sorry, but I have to go. I'll see you later." He said standing. He walked away, and I took Ace home. I called my parents to ask them to pick up dog food. I played with Ace a little while I was waiting for my patents to come home.
I heard the kitchen window break. I looked towards the kitchen. Ace started to growl. I grabbed my phone, and dialed Miguel's phone number. Ace and I hid in the closet.
"Hello?" Miguel said answering his phone.
"Someone broke into my house." I said quietly so that I wouldn't be found.
"I'll call the cops and I'll come to your house. Just stay hidden, okay?" He said with a soft and quiet voice.
"Okay." I responded then hung up the phone. I heard footsteps next to the closet. They stopped directly in front of the closet door. Me and Ace just stared at each other. Neither of us move, as if the smallest twitch would kill us. I held my breath, hoping the footsteps would move away from us.
We sat there, no sounds, not even from the guy on the other side of the door. Then, the door knob started to move. I was so scared. I couldn't move a muscle. Then just as the door was about to open there were footsteps up stairs. The door knob stopped moving and the sound of footsteps moving away echoed. I let out a quiet and small sigh of relief.
