"We're at the hospital, your father had a fall."

Her words etched themselves into my burdened mind. I gazed over at Dad's unconscious body; a white bandage was wrapped around his forehead and his leg was suspended in a cast.

An hour before:

"What do you mean? Is he alright!?" My voice trembled and cold sweat began to cover my palms.

"He's still in surgery b-but the doctors have said that he will be fine. I-I don't know how he fell; I was downstairs when I heard him shout a-and, he-" I heard Mum's voice crack as she began to sob.

"It's okay, Mum." I comforted, my own voice starting to ache as a lump appeared in my throat. I swallowed thickly, trying to hold back my emotions. "We'll be there soon. I love you, okay?" I whispered, tears threatening to spill from my stinging eyes. My lip quivered. "I love you too, [Name]. Please thank Arthur for me," She uttered.

"I will, I'll see you in a bit," I hushed and put down my phone.

"Your father, is he-"

"He's in surgery." I whispered. Arthur had heard Mum over the phone and was now driving me to the hospital. "Thank you," I choked, blinking back my tears.

"It's alright," He hushed and took hold of my hand, his other gripping the steering wheel strongly. "I'll stay with you," He squeezed my hand in reassurance and I gripped it as I buried my face in my cardigan, crying into the soft material.

--------End of flashback-----------

"The doctor said that he'd severely fractured his ankle and had hit his head when he fell. They said that his head is fine but they had to give him general anaesthetic to operate on his ankle." Mum informed me as she held and stroked Dad's hand. Arthur sat in a chair next to me, listening intently and still holding my hand. "I sent a message to Eliza," Mum said. I nodded. We sat in silence, watching Dad's chest rise and fall with his steady breathing, praying for him to wake up and start smiling again, maybe even crack a joke. But of course, that was impossible. The doctors said that he would sleep for the rest of the night and well into the next day. Mum's phone began to ring and she picked up immediately. "Hello? Yes. Yes he's fine, he's asleep right now." Mum's voice had finally calmed down and I felt comforted knowing that if Mum wasn't worried, then I shouldn't be. Although, I still couldn't shake the feeling of dread that lingered ever since I heard Mum say those words. "Yes, she's here. I'll pass you over," Mum handed the phone to me and I stood up to take it.

"Hey, [Name]. How are you?" My sister spoke softly, empathy woven into every word. I sighed and exhaled a depressed laugh. "Y-yeah, I'm fine I guess," I said, my voice still a little shaky.

"It's okay, [Name]." She hushed. I signalled to Mum that I would be outside in the hall and she nodded. I felt like I needed to talk to Elizabeta alone. "I'm just glad that it wasn't anything life threatening, you know?" I breathed and felt the lump rise in my throat.

"Yeah, gotta be glad about that," She sighed. "Are you going to stay the night?" She asked.

"I'm not sure. I want to but I'm pretty sure Mum won't let me. She hasn't told me what's going on with that yet, though I do know that the hospital is letting her stay," I replied.

"Hmm, they will probably only let one person stay," Eliza said doubtfully.

"Probably," I sighed. There was a pause. "How are you?" I asked.
