Chase pretty much always came over, for Dinner and for the night. Ever since my mother died and my father moved away because of her death, I've had this empty void in my heart. No one could fill it. Even my uncle could't fill it. Chase could. And he did. The moment Chase and I...well, got together my heart swelled up and the void disappeared. I was always happy, none of my bad moods anymore. Although I still got pissed at Leanne. Anyway, Chases Parents didn't mind him being here, they were either out gambling or in bed. That was when Chase picked up his fathers gun and started hunting. He Learned to look after himself. Find food, cook, do his own laundry, he walked to school. One winter it started snowing. All the roots, flowers and berries he usually collected were buried deep in white frost. All the pigeons were south and the rabbits deep in their burrows. He had no food. One day when he came to school, he was thin, pale and he had bags under his eyes. He was like me, he had no friends who would help him. He didn't have a job and he had no money. He was sitting alone at the cafeteria watching all the kids happily eating their warm soup at lunch. He looked Skinnier than a 7 year old. I sat down in front of him and handed him my bread roll. He stared at me in disbelief.
"Take it" I urged,
he shook his head
"Its yours, you paid for it" he croaked.
I put the bread roll on the table in front of him and took the lid off the soup thermos,
"Eat, your skinnier than a 7 year old" I said.
Again he shook his head.
"I'll force it into you if you don't eat it."
He slowly picked up the roll and tore a corner off, he dipped it into the soup and nibbled on it.
"Take some more, The soups only $3 I can get another thermos if we need it"
he ate another little bit.
"I'm Chase" he said
"Samantha, people call me Sam" I told him, he nodded his head.
"If you don't mind me asking, how did you get this thin?"
Chase fiddled with his roll.
"My parents don't look after me, I've been taking care of myself ever since I was twelve. Winter's usually the hard time, all the frost and everything" he replied shamefully.
"Wow so you've been taking care of yourself for three years now? Thats impressive. My mother died a little while ago, my father just left and sent me here to live with my uncle."
"Aw I'm sorry." We spent the whole lunch talking, getting to know each other.
"If you want, you can come stay with me for a while. We have too much food. We have a spare room, my uncle wouldn't mind."
it was risky, thats the sort of thing thats going to ruin a friendship if said too early.
"Do you mean that?"
"Of course I do!" I exclaim. "My Uncle would love to have you stay!"
That night Chase Finally had a good feed and some good rest. We drove him to school in the mornings and home at night. Chase and I became really good friends. I started to teach him how to ride a motorbike. On a weekend, while Chase was doing the usual obstacle corse a guy came around. Saying something about wanting Chase for a cross country motorbike representative.
"You serious?" He asked bewildered, "and I get paid right?"
"You sure do" the guy replied.
Chase jumped Sky high,
"Did ya hear that Sammy?! I get paid!"
He pulled me into a bone-breaking bear-hug.
"I can finally repay you for all the help you and your uncle have given me"
"Don't be stupid, we had too much. Besides I didn't have any friends before you came. Dept repaid."
He looks at me skeptically but agreed with me.
🐾
The doorbell rang, I raced to the door and opened it. Chase. No surprise there.
"Hey come on in."
I was tempting to give him his own key. It was getting annoying to always open the door.
"Good idea"
he flashes me a wolfy grin. I roll my eyes,
"Uncle! Chase is here!" I shout up the stairs.
Heavy footsteps come to my reply. My uncle, in a suit. The very thought astounds me.
"Alright you two, I have to go to a work presentation tonight. I will be back around 12. I don't want you outside"
Chase and I nod our heads once.
"Oh and Chase?"
"Yes?"
"If you get my niece pregnant, I'll blow your balls off with the 22 myself"
"UNCLE!" I shriek
"Thats fair enough Wilbur, I'll remember that" Chase nods.
As my Uncle passed he winks at me,
"Have fun, be safe!"
I watched from the bay windows as my uncle gets into his car and drives away.
"Jesus you've got guts"
I punched his arm. He shrugs.
"So what do you wanna to do?"
I walked around the living room. When he didn't reply, I turned around. My voice catches in my throat
"Aw hell no!"
Right where Chase was standing sits a black wolf with a white Splotch over his left eye that looks like someones gotten white paint and stabbed him with the bristles, the spots on his neck look like whiteout's been trickled down his midnight black fur.
