Chapter seventeen: Fire
Forty eight hours, forty eight hours since Cato was kissing me. I'm meant to be asleep but I'm too busy thinking.
I sit up but Cato says "You need to sleep."
"I'm not tired, in fact I would happily take your place and go on watch again."
"You're not going on watch again, it's my turn."
"I don't care, I guess we're just going to have two people up."
"Just shut up and go to sleep."
"Fine." I lay down and stare up at the poncho.
"Sleeping requires closed eyes."
"Snakes sleep with their eyes open."
"Yeah but last time I checked you were human, not snake."
"How do you know I'm not secretly half reptile?"
"Whatever, go to sleep."
Why does he always feel he has all power and not me?
I shut my eyes and pretend to sleep but in the end, I drift off.
"Wake up snake face." Cato's voice wakes me and I only just realise that he's called me 'snake face'.
"Is that name going to stick?"
"Yep."
"Okay then baboon butt."
"Fine, I won't call you snake face if you don't call me baboon butt."
"Sounds good to me."
"I'll wake up Marvel and you can wake three."
I walk over to the boy and say: "Time to get up."
We all eat two crackers for breakfast and fill up our water bottles in the lake behind the cornucopia.
I look down at my hair which hasn't actually bothered me in here, it's stayed out the way this whole time, no annoying swishing, no nothing. We sit under the shelter again and then Marvel turns hyper.
"Someone's lit a fire!" He yells.
I pass the three boy a spear and tell him to keep an eye on the supplies.
We run over to where the cloud of smoke is but find nobody's there.
"What the heck...?" I ask no one in particular.
"I recon it's some kind of mean trick." Marvel's voice is filled with anger and disgust.
"We should wait here, they might come back."
"Cato that's a stupid idea, why would they come back when this fire was probably made to distract us from something."
Another wisp of smoke appears further on and we run over, maybe we could out-run whoever it is, that's when we hear it, several large BANGs sound and I can only say one thing.
"Oh-" I have to stop myself from swearing because I know there are five year-olds watching, "fudge, that didn't sound good." We sprint back to the cornucopia to see all of the supplies gone.
