Chapter twenty-three

Chapter twenty three: letting go

     "Clove!"

I drop to my knees in agony, it's insufferable and I can't stand it. Just as I flop backwards he catches me and I lay in his arms.

      "I'm sorry Cato, I had to, I couldn't watch you die."

     "Well now I have to."

I feel really bad about making him see my last breaths but the damage is done now.

      "You have some chocolate on your face." I say, hoping he'll remember the time we snuck out and stole loads of candy, he said that to me as we were walking home and that's been something I've always remembered.

Tears start to form in his eyes and I can feel a lump growing in my throat.

     "I love you Clove."

      "I love you too."

We gently kiss for about ten seconds.

I start to cry, not bothering to wipe away the tears.

      "You've won Cato."

     "I've not won this, I've lost you, you were all I cared about, I just wanted you to get back alive."

      "You have more to go back to."

     "I have just as much as you."

      "Sorry, I just wanted you to win."

He wipes a tear away from my face.

     "You were the first one I loved, and now you're the first person I've lost." I didn't realise Cato was so good with words until now, when I'm going to die.

Why is life like this? It's just not fair, from when I was four, he's been there for me and now I'm dying in his arms.

Our first kiss flys back to me, I must have been twelve or thirteen at the time, I was sat on a bench watching the sun set over the water he sat down next to me and we sat there in silence until I eventually spoke.

      "It's beautiful, isn't it?"

     "Almost as beautiful as you."

That's when it all happened, he lent forward and kissed me, it wasn't long, to be honest it probably lasted three seconds.

I fall back into reality.

      "I love you Cato."

     "I love you too."

As we kiss for the final time, darkness engulfs me and I have to let go.
