Chapter twenty two

Chapter twenty two: The finale

      "Wait! The pack!" I run back to it and open it. Two sets of body armour lay in there and I take a set.

The legs are too big, the arms are too big and I think they would work better on the legs, the chest is not made for somebody who's 5'4'' and the head looks like a little kid trying on the victor's crown.

      "Ta da!!!"

Cato smirks from behind a bush and then steps out to reveal his. It's tiny on him.

It's my turn to smirk.

      "D'you wanna swap?" He asks.

I easily take off my giant stuff but getting Cato's off is a different story...

We eventually swap and it looks ten times better.

      "Where's your head armour?"

     "It didn't fit."

     "Cato, put it on, it doesn't matter if you look ridiculous."

*six hours later*

      "Ugh, we've been searching for hours Cato, the arena's to big, let's just get some rest for now." I complain.

     "You're right, we won't find them, they'll have to find us."

      "With Lover Boy's injuries, I don't think so."

     "What about that medicine?"

      "That's probably only enough for one and Katniss will be too selfish to share."

We lay down but when I close my eyes I hear a howling sound coming from  my left.

     "Shoot." I hear Cato say.

      "What was that?"

     "No clue but it didn't sound good."

      "Run?"

     "Yep." We sprint down to the cornucopia where we can clearly see everything around us.

     "Okay, start climbing."

      "Climbing? You know I can't climb trees, that's why you did it with potato, not me!"

     "No, climb the cornucopia. Now!"

I don't bother questioning him, I just climb. After one minute of helpless struggling, I'm finally half way up and on the final ledge but this one is probably a three foot gap and my legs aren't going to stretch that far, I've never had flexible legs.

Cato's happily managed to get up and now he's telling me to do it too.

      "Cato, I can't, this ledge is over half the height of me!"

     "Fine, I'll help you."

He hops onto the bit I'm stuck on and the bends down.

     "Hop on." A piggyback? Seriously?

I jump onto his back and wrap my arms and legs around his body. I have to admit, this looks wrong in every way possible. He climbs up as if I'm not even on his back and once we reach the top, he says the weirdest thing ever.

     "That was easy."

      "Easy???"

     "Yeah, you practically weigh the same as a chihuahua!"

We both burst out into laughter.

Another howl my right, but closer this time.

      "Okay, what the heck? Are they sending mutated wolves to eat us."

     "Nope, but I can see potato and pita." He's used my nickname but this time, he's not mocking me. I grip my knife tightly before pulling it out of my jacket.

      "Pita?" I ask.

     "It's a type of bread."

      "Right..."

They come running up to us and start climbing. They haven't noticed us yet.

       "C'mon Peeta, you can do it."

        "I can't, my leg, I'm sorry Katniss, you have to do this alone." He grabs a knife, "I love you mum, I love you dad, I love you Katniss."  And he plunges it deep into his chest.

A cannon sounds.

       "No! Peeta!" Now would be the perfect time, but I can't bring myself to do it.

She sits over Peeta's body, sobbing.

     "C'mon Clove, just do it." Cato whispers in my ear.

I raise my knife to make the final death, and throw it down.

She screams and there's another cannon.

     "We've won! We did it!" I throw my arms around Cato and kiss him.

We're broken apart by an announcement.

       "Congratulations, Cato Hadley and Clove Kentwell, you have made it to the end, unfortunately, there has been a slight rule change, there may only be one victor, good luck, and may the odds be ever in your favour."

     "No... Clove..."

      "Cato, just do it."

     "I can't."

      "Well I can." I retrieve my knife from Katniss' dead body and stab myself.
